Over in classic, I started a thread about Ricky Hatton and now one of the side topics has evolved into who/what is a British Boxer? Does Wales count? Some say yes others no How about Scotland or Ireland? How about guys like Lennox Lewis- born to Jamaican parents, born in London, represented Canada in the olympics? Is he jamaican, British or canadian..2 of 3..all or none??? Is their a consensus on what a British boxer is???
i wouldnt say northern ireland , that is not britian it is uk british would be scotland , wales and england n.ire and ire would be irish if you are from n.ire you fight for ireland in the olympics
I always forget about that Britain/ UK distinction.atsch But being eligible to fight for a Birtish title isn't a bad starting point and NI boxers are able to do that. I guess theres plenty of "right" answers to this one.
some boxers from n.ire would consider themselves british coming from the loyalist communities but not many , a few that come to mind would be neil sinclair , scott belshaw , and luke wilton
"The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland[note 7] ([ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminology_of_the_British_Isles"]commonly known[/ame] as the United Kingdom, the UK, or Britain)"
England, Scotland, Wales and Protestants in the north of Ireland. Definitely not Irish fighters. Scottish fighters of Irish Catholic descent are also entitled not to fight as British imo.
