Steve Robinson,top fighter who gets forgotten.

I was a big Naz fan at the time - so despite being Welsh and watching the fight live in a Welsh Pub full of Welshmen screaming on Robinison I wanted Naz to win the fight - and thought he would do so and win it easy.

However its a fair comment - Robbo was treated badly.

He didnt want the fight - he was forced to by Warren - while still on honeymoon.

He had 2 weeks to prepare - he ended up doing pads in Dai Gardners living room they were in such a desperate rush to train for the fight

He was the challenger on only £200,000 - Naz got £500,000

He got beaten up and goaded in the ring

He had his WBO belt handed back to him when Naz had worn it for a while all damaged and messed up

**** man, I always knew Warren used Robbo as a stepping stone for Naz, ostensibly so Naz could evade the then WBO super-bantam champion Barrera, but I never realised he was forced in those circumstances. And to think some people are still sympathising that Khan discarded Warren.
I've always believed that fight in many ways ruined both guys' potential.
Naz should have remained at bantam/super-bantam where his uncanny reflexes may well have earned him comprehensive wins over people like Barrera and Morales before their own skills had become so well honed and earned himself genuine greatness, and I still think Robinson could have given guys like Johnson and Kelly a very stern argument, establishing himself as a good operator at world level rather then be remembered simply as a man who got a lucky chance before being hammered by Hamed.

Guys like Steve Robinson I knew of before Hamed was on the main stream scene.

Back in the earlier years when he burst on the scene as Champion.

He was earning a measely £52 per week as a part time security card in Debhenhams.

Then he got offered the oppurtinity of a lifetime - a WBO World title fight on late notice.

And thats what I call seizing a oppurtunity of a lifetime.

 

Yes he was the bet featherweight for a long time but he doesnt fit into a top tier that includes Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler, Henry Armstrong, Jim Driscoll, Abe Attell, Salvador Sanchez, Vincente Saldivar etc. Nas wasnt bad but they were on another level

 

I agree - but your talking ATG.

He is a modern great featherweight at least - still a **** hot fighter.

Thats top tier by anyones standards.

 

I remeber the cardiff crowd on the night

"Hamed Hamed ..............who the **** is Hamed ???? " - they chanted over and over.

I was pissed up on White Cider - that night - watching the fight - the good old days !!!
