Yes, I remember in the build-up I was starting to think Tyson had a chance and I think that was down to the publicity and the fact that they were trying to make it look like a tight contest.

 

I didn't think the odds would be that close.....

Obviously Lewis had the loss to Rahman, but Tyson hadn't beaten anybody with a pulse since a semi-retired, one-eyed Bruno six years earlier, and before that it was Ruddock. The rest were domestic level, if that.

It's a strange thing, I guess there was that much clamour for it around 1996 that it just happened anyway.

I wonder how many people got the 25/1 on Holyfield in the 1st fight..... I'm sure plenty cashed in on the rematch, for which I believe Tyson was still favourite.

 

I think a lot of it was that a few weeks out everyone was thinking logically, that Tyson hadn't beaten a decent fighter in donkeys years and Lewis was a very good, active champ but during fight week people started falling for the Tyson myth again and putting a few quid on a Tyson KO.

 

I think a lot of Tyson fans wanted to believe that he had one big fight left in him, esp, as Lewis was considered chinny after the mcCall/ Rahman fights.

I got 4/1 on Holyfield for the rematch, it was the easiest money I've ever made on a fight given how Holy dominated Tyson in the first fight. That said, I though Tyson would walk through Holy in the first fight!!!!

 

Hmmm, I was only 11 at the time, but I can't remember anyone saying Holyfield would win the first fight, not that I was all that bothered anyway.... I was too concerned with Leeds not scoring a goal all season under George Graham

As you say, the 4/1 was easy money, the first fight was hardly a fluke, it was a triumph of desire and class over bluff (let's be honest here).... I wish I'd been into boxing at that time and old enough to bet.

The first fight still makes the hairs on my neck stand up.... it was a sensation, beating Tyson at his own game.

I guess in hindsight a lot of people (especially me) think, ''oh Holyfield beat Tyson, so what who cares, he'd beat him 100/100 anyway'' - but at the time I guess it was really big. No better illustrated than by Des Lynam at the SPOTY awards of 1996.

Booth to stop Hunter was 4/1 (some places 5/1) but I felt that was a cert TBH.

 

The first fight was a MASSIVE upset, at the time people knew Tyson wasn't prime but Holyfield was a smaller, come forward fighter who Tyson wouldn't have to go looking for.

A lot of people will tell you they had money on Holy at 28/1 that night. Ask to see their tickets...

I got 5/2 for Sexton win only.... never looked at the pts/stoppage options tbh.
