Do you think Ismael Laguna would have had any type of punt at Eder Jofre in 1963?

Obviously Laguna didn't make the limit in 63, and quite possibly he couldn't have, but he was ranked as a bantam in 62, at the top of the division. Assuming he could make weight without crushing himself, what sort of chance do you give him against prime Jofre?

If you feel the weight would be the most important issue, say, and say how you think they would get on at 121lbs.

    That's an interesting one!

I think Jofre's got to be favourite, a bit more seasoned at that time.

Well guessing from his Lightweight days he still had good movement, fast hands and a tricky style.

I think he could pose Jofre alot of problems with his fast movement and snappy jab, although you have to liek Jofre's experiance

What a wild (and interesting) idea. I think you would have to give Jofre the edge as the other posters have mentioned due to experience. I haven't looked at film of these two in a while, but Jofre would at times lean forward onto the front foot...When considering a match-up between Pep and Jofre, I always thought Pep would try to spin him off balance, then pop him when he placed about 70% of his weight on the front foot. Not sure Laguna could do something like that so early in his career. But he might be able to score when Jofre does that though. Interesting match-up. (I like Laguna's style)

Read an article ages ago stating that Laguna pulled himself out of the bantam rankings in early 63...Ill try and track it down. By the end of the year Ismael had slotted into the no1 spot for feather.

I think by that stage his team knew that bantam was to much and have my doubts about a young Laguna being able to handle 15 rounds against a ATG boxer-puncher like Jofre.

Never seen Ismael at bantam...if he was as good as he was at lightweight then he is a handful for anyone..but he probably wasnt the finished product by that stage either.

The experience gap would be almost certainly too much in the end.Laguna hardly disgraced himself vs Saldivar though, and may have had it in him to offer up a good challenge.

Jofre was never quick and i expect Laguna was insanely fast at this weight.

Not sure, my earliest copy is against ortiz in 65...but I am awaiting a copy of the Saldivar fight in 64. there is likely earlier footage but I have not stumbled onto it yet!

I have him against Saldivar as a FW. Laguna was considered one of the leading contenders for Sugar Ramos' title at that time, but the upset by Saldivar supplanted him and Vicente went on to get the shot at Ramos instead, after which Laguna moved up to 135 and challenged Ortiz not too long afterward.

As for the thread topic, I'd favor Jofre to use his combined strength, skill, and experience to pressure his way to a decision much as Saldivar did. Can't imagine Laguna was too strong at 118 pounds either.
