Magoo, I hear dat.... I do........ But like Gil Clancy use to say: "This fight will come down to who's the better catcher." Both Max and Jerry ate lotsa' leather....... Jerry counter-punched much better than Max, but Max was bigger and stronger than Jerry............... Max takes his lumps early on, however, I see Max landing some heavy leather on Jerry and the referee coming to Jerry's rescue, cuz Jerry Quarry simply refuses to quit........ Still, bravery doesn't win this fight.... I pick Mad Max Baer.......... :good MR.BILL
I think Quarry was easy to hit for Ali and Frazier - who are both much better fighters than Baer... Quarry would be able to take Baer's shots though and his superior handspeed and decent power would get Baer's attention.... I also don't don't think was all that much stronger than Quarry.... IMO the 1969 version of Quarry who warred with Smokin' Joe before being overwhelmed and worn down could beat Baer without too much difficulty.... As long as he doesn't have a brain fart like in the Chuvalo fight where he was winning easily, got clipped, lost the count.... Baer is obviously not the boxer Ali was nor could he apply the consistent, suffocating pressure that Frazier brought.... Baer presents Quarry with no discernable stylistic difficulties.... Of course, his punch could be a potential problem for ANYONE of course.... However, that said, I feel Quarry presents Baer with many diiferent problems whereas Baer's only advantage would be in one-punch power. 1969 Quarry TKO 10 over 1933 Baer
I, for one, NEVER thought Quarry could beat Foreman in the 1970s........ Regardless of Foreman's flawed boxing skills back then, I still think he was too big and powerful for Quarry at that juncture........................... I think "Mad" Max Baer also fits that mold, too................. Quarry would have his moments, but he'd get drawn into a war that he'd find too much to digest......... Baer, like Foreman, would eventually over-power Jerry Quarry and force the stoppage by round 8........... Peace..... MR.BILL
This is how I see it. Baer was by far the greater fighter but the more times I play this out in my head the more I see it turning out like you say. Maybe Baer takes the rematch.
I have thought about this matchup some more. No matter how many ways I look at it, I just can't come of with a way in my mind for any version of Quarry beating the Baer who beat Schmeling. The best Baer is too much better than the best Quarry...in my opinion.
The Baer that beat Schneling would surely have too much? I've only seen Quarry in losing efforts however, so don't feel qualified to make an analysis.
The Baer that beat Schmeling would have been too uch for a lot of people. A bit like the Douglas that foght Tyson.
I think this may have been Quarry at his best: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6bxqcAFKO0[/ame] To show how well he did against big punchers: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SoIWuKSV1E[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICbFIr_Pk-I[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYj9VtDH8SA[/ame] Counter punching exhibition: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdzRLsnJb98"]http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6732052112522616863#[/ame]
I am mystified as to why you think Quarry could floor Max ,let alone stop him. Baer had a top chin, if anyone goes down it would be Jerry. Who kod Baer in his prime? He took the count against Louis while fully conscious. Nova stopped him when he was all through ,and then on injuries.
I love Baer as a colorful, exciting character but have trouble taking this match up seriously. Quarry was a very skilled fighnter. Baer was not fast, very clumsy, had terrible footwork and telegraphed his right hand by a mile. Far and away his best win was against a Schmeling that did not show up. Jerry had an iron chin, was an excellent counter puncher, had terrific stamina and overall boxing ability. He made his career exposing big, stong, one dimensional sluggers. Foreman's management wanted no part of him for this reason and stayed clear. Mac Foster, Ron Lyle, Ernie Shavers were all taken apart by Jerry as would be Mr. Baer. Quarry was a terrific fighter who would have dominated the era between Tunney and Louis with only a prime Sharkey was a possible foil.
In the era between Tunney and Louis, Quarry would have been a champion. I'm not sure which of the champions he would have beaten, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been Schmeling. The Baer fight is intriguing however...I think it would have depended on which Max Baer showed up...Quarry may have had better all aound skills, but Baer had that right hand, and some intangibles, those that came into play in his fight with Schmeling. I can't decide yet, but I will.
Baer could certainly punch and was durable but I have to go with Quarry. Better boxer both offensively and defensively. Threw combinations better and more often and had better footwork. Baer didn't set up his potent right with a good hard jab and Quarry would be able to avoid Baer's big right hand enough and counterpunch his way to a decision or possibly a late round stoppage. If only Baer learned the fundamentals of boxing instead of relying on his power so much he may have been nearly unstoppable. But in this matchup I have to go with the more polished Quarry.
