Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao: great feats but not unpredented!!!

    Floyd Mayweather is one of the best pure boxers I've ever seen and Manny Pacquiao is one of the most dynamic. Later this year we should see them in the ring and until then everyone will debate how great one fighter is and how the other is a fraud, etc. Both fighters have accomplished impressive feats in their career's but IMO have yet sone anything to consider their placement among the pantheon of all-time greats. There were no alphabet belts, balck fighters had to deal with the color line, only 8 world titles etc. Compare these two contemporary greats to greats of past

    Mayweather-undefeated, 5 major titles in 5 weight classes. defeated twelve world champions and and several hall of famers.

    Pacquiao-won titles in 6 major weight classes( dont count WBO at 147) and has defeated 10 world titlists and several hall of famers



    The great weight jumpers of old......
    Henry Armstrong- titles at 126, 135, 147 and drew with middleweight champion....Competed on world class level in a span of 34 pounds

    Sam Langforde- started at lightweight never held a title but beat many great fighters and beat world class heavyweights

    Georges Carpentier-started young as a flyweight and competed at a WORLD CLASS LEVEL ALL THE WAY TO HEAVYWEIGHT....former light heavyweight champion

    Kid Gavilan- Started as a bantamweight and won the welterweight title and held it for several years and competed for middleweight title

    Harry Greb, was a smallish middleweight and competed and defeated world class fighters all the way to heavyweight

    Mickey Walker- former welterweight and middleweight champion, beat many hall of famers fought and beat world class light heavyweights and competed at heavyweight, thats over 50 pounds

    Roberto duran-titles in 4 weights started at featherweight and fought as high as light heavyweight

    Tommy hearns- titles in 4 weight classes from 147-175, competed as high as cruiserweight....thats 43 pounds :scaredas:

    Manny and Floyd are great but neither has accomplished unprecedented feats in the sport and I believe they have more to do before they are mentioned with the Robinsons, Grebs, and Durans of boxing.

    rjj won the golden gloves at age 17 at 139lbs and then went on to win a piece of the hw crown. it goes unnoticed a bit on here but that is another pretty significant accomplishment.

    I forgot to add Jones, 160-heavyweight is impressive and how did I forget the first to do it in Bob Fitzsimmons

    Alright, "It's all been done."

    That doesn't change the fact that they are All-Time Greats worthy of being spoken about among these other legends. We can sit and glorify people from the old days just because they're from the old days, but you can't deny that Floyd and Manny would compete in any era. They would win and defend titles in any era.

    Completely agree.

    I don't understand why we should use the extraordinary acheivements of Greb, Langford et al, to downgrade what Floyd and Pacquiao have done.

    Both guys are special and could have lived with anyone.

    Ted 'Kid' Lewis turned pro as a featherweight and won the British Title. Later in his career he challenged Georges Carpentier for the Light-Heavyweight Title in a bid to set up a Heavyweight Title fight between himself and Jack Dempsey.
