Lacks the resume to match his tallents and therefore will always be hard to judge just how truely great prime Jones was. But against those he did fight, damn......
Out of all of his posts in this thread the only thing I agree with is Toney was the best fighter in the world, when Roy Jones handed him his ass.
Michael Nunn would've beaten him and Jones knew it. He officially ducked Nunn by giving up the WBC belt rather than face him, when Nunn was made mandatory. He also didn't want anything of Nunn at 168. Nunn was better than Jones. Heck, look at what Nunn did to a fresh fit Toney - just stood right in front of him and completely out-boxed and out-classed him, better than Jones did. He wanted absolutely nothing of Chris Eubank at lightheavy from '96 to '98, when Eubank wanted the fight. Frank Liles was a dangerous puncher from the southpaw stance, and Jones knew it. Liles holds amateur wins over Jones in '88, and knockdowns. Another southpaw, Graciano Rocchigiani, was the most difficult fighter in the world to get through to with accuracy and a rock-solid highest-level operator. Jones didn't wanna know. And then there's Michalczewski, Calzaghe. Steve Collins was no slouch. But no, nothing, Jones never showed interest in the toughest fights!
I am surprised of the accolades given Jones on ESB. Usually every boxer is a bum, over rated and calls for him to retire.
I think Toney was a better technical fighter. Fought more textbook and I did hear about him being drained from the weightloss. I just find it a coincidence that came up after the Jones fight and not after koing Barkley who was past it or he didn't have that problem when he took care of Nunn which was an impressive win for Toney. Better technique? Yes. Better than Jones? I don't know about that one. Had they fought 2 or 3 times we could of had an answer to that one, but I do give Toney some cred for calling out Jones years after to get another fight on and Jones did turn the other cheek. Toney vs. Roy at heavyweight instead of Jones vs. Ruiz would of been very interesting. It gave me an impression Toney was chasing Roy the same way Marquez was chasing Pacquiao.
See, what i put in bold from your post.... Liles turned down his biggest payday offer from Hbo and Jones. Didn't know that did you? Think before you write bull crap, I don't even want to start on DM, he suffered more for not making the fight happen than Jones ever will.. Also Jones dominated a fighter that beat him.
A single word. Unbelievable. His natural talent, reflexes, speed, and power were amazing to behold. Fastest hand speed of any boxer I have ever seen. Triple and quadruple left hooks, absolutely beautiful. 3 things stand out for me when it comes to Jones. During one of Jones' fights, George Foreman comments that Roy Jones does not need a jab to be great. During the fight with Vinny Pazienza, Jones is the only fighter to not get hit by his opponent for an entire round (round 4) according to Compubox. During the fight with James Toney, one of the announcers (I forget who it was) said that there were 2 other people in the ring with James Toney during the fight and Toney was looking for the other fighter (in reference to Roy being so elusive and so fast). I'm one of his biggest fans, but I hope he just retires. He needs to before he gets seriously hurt.
