Fights that lived up to/did n't live up to the hype..!

Over the years,some fights have lived up to all the pre-fight hoopla in every way,and some others have been a total anti-climax. Choose just ONE from each category. For the former,I pick the 1971 FOTC from Ali and Frazier. A career best performance from Joe,pitted against a ring rusty,but still highly dangerous Muhammad. No other heavyweight around at that time,would have beaten Ali on 8-3-71. For the latter,I select Holmes-Cooney 1982. Cooney gave a spirited challenge,but apart from a few moments,it was Holmes all the way.

 

Hagler/Hearns amazingly surpassed the hype.

de laHoya/ChavezI was my biggest let down.

 

I just watched Holmes/Cooney and was surprised actually about how my memory matched up with the event. Cooney landed far more solid shots than I remembered and it was amazing considering he was so much slower than Larry. Also, I didn't remember how viciously Larry had been punched in the groin.

ODLH VS Mayweather was a let down for the hype. Big time, imo. Duran/Leonard II was ...just wow. Shockingly against the hype.

 

Duran/Leonard 2 was such a letdown.

 

De la hoya vs. trinidad - here we have what was called match of the millennium.

Instead, Felix Trinidad was outboxed most of the time and was made to look a bit bad, and Oscar De la hoya went to cruise control the last couple of rounds made him look like a coward.

 

Two from 1980:

Duran - Leonard 1 lived up to it's hype, while Holmes-Ali, thought by many 'experts' to be a competitive fight going in, was just sad.

 

I bet larry still remembers. I bet he wears a cup whenever he gets together w/ Cooney.:hi:

 

Of course if he got together w/ Ayala, he'd have to wear a chastity belt:good:good:good

Flew down to San Antonio, spent an ungodly amount of cash...

And Chavez-Whitaker sucked.

joe louis vs max shmelling despite the big win for louis probably wasn't what many expected going in ..

 

You should keep out of boxing threads period.

 

It kinda sucked live. First of all, the arena was too big, half of it being partitioned off to make it seem more "intimate"... There was a huge build up and then a dreadfully slow start, Whitaker figured him out a bit, but absolutely nothing dangerous... In the end I had it pretty close, with Whitaker by a point. It was hardly an amazing performance in my eyes. He figured out one or two things about his opponent and that was enough to get by... Chavez, on the otherhand was quite unimaginative, kind of the beginning of the end for him. Two great fighters don't always equal a great fight.
