Chopping wood helps your punching power because it gives you LUMBERJACK STRENGTH! (It also helps you grow a beard if you have trouble with that.)
It may also have to do with the fact that in this movement you only tense just before the moment of impact, just like a punch?
That is why I think the heavy bag is the best sports specific resistance training. Full range of motion, sudden impact.
It adds variety... also downward motion will train different muscles to an upright punch bag. Not sure who the downward striking is overly relevant to boxing but that said variety makes you train better.
The Canadian sidr of the Family are all Lumberjacks. Many years ago they were sent to the Sahara to cut all the Trees down. Did a great Job.
...he severed that massive wood in one slice. i strongly recommend this wood-chopping. Makes a man of you.
The motion of a wood chop is different to slamming your fist against an immovable object (such as a heavy bag) those extra inches of extension as your arm carries the force through a solid object with your wrist locked in, dramatically changes your strength dynamics. Instead of powdering or snapping the hand on impact then instantly retracting, you now follow through entirely. It means you are more accurate, controlled and can pin point your strength into your wrist which will drive the fist THROUGH the target. This is training for a different grade of punch altogether. Note that the impact not being on your fist, rather on the end of stick (distance) means your wrist has far less leverage. So you have to tighten even harder to compensate. Chopping wood is based on your forearm strength. (Big hint if you want to be a power based fighter).
Pugsley, you seem to have good knowledge about the coorelation between woodchopping and boxing soo i would ask you this: - what action is best in the woodchopping action: Action of hitting downward ex: splitting logs Or Horizontal motion: cutting down a tree Thanks
