One thing I find overlooked in Canzoneri was his incredible feinting ability. He would be feinting with his head and shoulders almost constantly, in fact there is a sequence in round 9 of the second Ross fight where he draws Ross to the ropes, feints then bombards him with counter punches before sliding back to centre ring.
I have not seen the rematch will have to investigate it. McLarnin hurt Canzoneri in the first bout but Tony outclassed him afterwards
I have little knowledge on the bout whatsoever. Only that Canzoneri was busted up facially, but there seems to be a bigger picture, a sparring injury and postponement. I'm hoping M2S reinvestigates this thread as he's the kinda poster who will have the synopsis.
Canzoneri was described as "slow" and a "shell of his former self" in the McLarnin rematch so I'm not too sure what to make of it. He didn't seem quite as fast even in their first fight. He didn't really show anything after the win over McLarnin.
So what do you make of the first fight as a plus point on Canzoneris resume A? And of the rematch for McLarnins?
I think it should be considered a very big win. Canzoneri was a natural lightweight and a rather small one at that, being only 5'4-5'5. He had fought almost 150 times. McLarnin at that time was a natural welterweight and was coming off his 3 welterweight battles against Barney Ross. He then went onto beat Lou Ambers in his final career bout. McLarnin himself considered his last two fights against Ambers and Canzoneri to rate among his best performances so he wasn't that badly declined in my opinion. He was 28 years old and had fought 60+ times.
Interesting. Having only seen bits of Canzoneri I know a fair amount about him, and hold him in high regard. I've got some fights on the way, am looking forward to observing his full repoitoire.
Very good. He was no one punch puncher but he could hurt you with either hand. He lacks the KO% because he fought so many top fighters. It´s hard to knock them out. He KOed Chocolate and Berg, something not many guys were able to. I think Berg was only KOed twice in his career, once by Canzi and once late in his career - not speaking of TKOs here. Chocolate was also only KOed twice. Knocking them out means something.
I agree, he seems a really sharp puncher because of his counter-punching style, he counters you and it hurts sorta thing. I thought he struggled with Chocolate in the first fight because he couldnt counter Chocolate and had to lead and this tkaing away abit of his power, would be interested to see the rematch but I doubt it exists.
It seems by the time his lifestyle caught up with the Cuban Bon Bon and he was slipping a bit. So, Canzi may have been able to force him fighting is kind of fight.
Dont know too much on Chocolate so cant comment. But Canzoneri very rearely managed to counter him and when he did he stunne dhim like in the 4th.
Chocolate was as flashy outside the ring as he was inside. He loved his fame and enjoyed it. He also took drugs later on, I don´t know if as early as Canzi II. Keep in mind Cocaine was legal back then.
