I know this is bad practice but I do this (unintentionally), but besides practice and serious concentration, any tips on how people have overcome this?

Maybe you got problems breathing through your nose. If so try one of those modern gumshields.

    Practise.

I have terrible breathing through my nose, UNTIL I exert myself physically and then its clear as a bell.

Ever seen the Peterson brothers fight? Everytime they throw a punch they practically yell. That's not a coincidence. Even the little kids that train at their gym do that; it's what their taught to do so they don't hold their breath.

Don't get those, these suck ass. Just practice breathing relaxed and now exhaling every time you punch

A top and bottom shield will restrict breathing thru his mouth moreso then a single, and it isn't even close, breathing airway built in or not. I've worn the brainpad once as forgot my single when on the road, and it felt like I had a ski boot shoved in my mouth.

But some people like them I guess.

Well, I've got one too and I've got no problems breathing through that airway. But of course it's an individual experience. One likes it, the other doesn't.

No need to be an arse about it, breathing is relatively ignored considering how fundamental it is. Particularly for people with permanent nasal issues it can be quite a big deal.

Like a couple of the above said if you make the hissing sound or yell or whatever on each throw, your exhaling , so you the automatically inhale. I never used to hiss when i threw cos i though it sounded stupid lol but it works really well. So im now a hisser

i dont think its relatively ignored, get a novice to throw punches non stop for 30 seconds and he will devise a way to breathe properly or else he will pass out

Even pros don't throw flurries non-stop. The hissing is good for single punches, but it's very hard to hiss that fast if you throw quick flurries that consist of at least 4 punches in a row.

    I throw hissy fits.

I knew I hissed a lot, but after reading this thread went back and watching some old vids and man, it's almost embarrassing.

I had a similar problem for a while. A good way to overcome this is when your on the bag step back and breath naturally, and whenever you throw a combination exhale throughout the entire combination. Focus on this and eventually it becomes natural and you wont even realise your doing it.
