Great story and I also heard about Vingo as young but rising star, my uncles were rooting for him over Marciano (as they were from N.Y.) Vingo was not a polished finisher but they all said he could hit and put a lot of guys on the floor. Both men were young and green at the time but my Uncles walked away from the fight as Marciano fans, although they rooted against him again vs LaStarza but my uncles said they thought Marciano did enough (dropped LaStarza) and landed the better punches to win (1st fight) after the Lasarza fight they saw him improve with each fight and had the faith in him from there on.
Bummy Davis... Thank you for your interest in the Vingo/Marciano fight that I saw at MSG.A rea thriller... Your namesake Bummy Davis, was a great favorite of mine...I watched Davis fight 4 or 5 times , in the 1940,s when I was a youngster...Bummy Davis had the best left hook, I,ve ever seen...I watched Davis , as a 10 to one underdog ko, Bob Montgomery , in one round, inMSG in 1944... The N.Y. crowd went wild as Bob Montgomery was a great lightweight....Davis sure could hit.....
Davis was a tough guy from a tough area "East New York" or Brownsville at that time it was a tough Jewish ghetto and many gangsters and fighters came out of there. That was before my time but I knew Bummy's brother Harry" Little Gangy" but Bummy's brother Willie (Big Gangy) got 35 yrs to life for a triple homicide. Bummy's name was Abraham AVoommy morphed to Bummy and I was told he had one of the best left hooks of all time. He KO'd another good friend of mine Bernie"school Boy" Friedkin who fought draws with 3 world Champions and later became a boxing judge. Shame Bummy got killed trying to help a friend in a bar hold-up. Thanks for your posts
In answer to your several questions guys.....Yes I have the book"Bummy Davis,And Murder Inc." by Ron Ross, the auther who I met in L.I, Two years ago....Yes I saw Ike Williams KO Beau Jack ,in Philadelphia, 1948, in six rounds...I was a youngster then, and my friend and I took a bus to Philly, for the fight...In the 6th round Williams had Beau Jack Helpless, with beau Jack,s hands dangling on the ropes, behind his back, until the referee belatedly stopped the slaughter....Ike Williams uncuffed, was the BEST lightweight I ever saw.....No, I never saw Lew Jenkins fight, but my father,[who saw Greb/Tunney], saw Lew Jenkins Ko , Lou Ambers twice....Ambers was over the hill by then...Lew Jenkins, when in shape was a murderous puncher.....Yes, I did meet Bernie Friedkin, about a few years before he died,in Brookly,N.Y. I asked him about his KO by Bummy Davis, but he wasn,t too aware by then.......One memory I have as a boy of 7 or 8 years old...My older cousin took me to Charley Beechers Gym and Poolroom, to see a sensational prospect of that time, Al Davis, training in the gym, in back of the poolroom. I was told by my father before going there "to keep quiet, because there are BAD men there".I sure did as told....Murder Inc, tough guys , were part of the spectators there..... Ah memories.....
I was on leave from the Navy, coming out of the Pitkin Theater in Brownsville, brooklyn, when I saw Bummy Davis, and his wife, leaving a luncheonette, shortly after he ritired...A couple of weeks later, back from leave, I was shocked to read of Bummy Davis, shot and killed, in a bar he sold recently on Remsen Ave., Brooklyn... Died a hero too......
bummy davis, the bar has long since been replaced by 2 family homes on Remsen Ave.Time waits for no one.....Davis was to fight Morris Reif, for his last fight. He retired instead....I had lunch with Morris Reif 3 years ago in Florida...He was another Brownsville, great left hooker....
I'm a west coast man from L.A. who somehow managed to get talked into moving to Raleigh, NC. back in 2004... At the time it seemed like the thing to do, but now I realize it was a mistake...... I'm not really into hanging out with "Good Ol' Boys" and "Cattle Russlers." MR.BILL
Bummy Davis, one more insight... You mention that Jack Dempsey had "decent combo handspeed".I must differ. Please watch the 2nd Dempsey/Tunney fight in 1927. Watch the Famous long count , in the seventh round....It shows the 32 year old rusty Dempsey, landing 6 or 7 fast,FAST and powerful, blows, dropping the iron chinned Tunney..Fast as hell, and this was in SLOW MOTION.....Yes in Slow Motion....No Heavy Ali included punched any faster and with power and precision....What say you?.
No I agree, I have alway been a fan of Dempsey and I think he is underated on this board for sure. Dempsey showed power and speed in his fight with Firpo and with Willard he did not have to show defence because he was all offence. I rate Dempsey in my top 5. We saw a flash of what he could do in the battle of the long count and Jack was rusty and his one punch over Sharkey at his age shows his power. Dempsey also like to punch the collar bone and the heart, the ear and the rib cage. I also rate Marciano in my top 5 and although Marciano was not a traditional combination puncher he was could execute a quick short unorthodox shot and take you out. He beat many quick sharpshooters to the punch and could catch you from weird angles in weird places. Marciano also would keep punching and I give him the edge in stamina. The layne right hand looked like a tap but the 34-1 Layne was out on his feet. I think this fight would be a war and we can only speculate but I think Marciano more than likely would have to pick his sturdy ass off the floor to get back at it and I think the middle rounds would be the heat of the battle but the late rds would see the end. Joe Louis is my number 1 Heavyweight of all time and he would have trouble with both of these men. I know a lot of people think Ali was the greatest and he was a great fighter but none of these guys get out of a fight with one another with out losing part of themselves Dempsey would ripped through a lot of these overweight and undertrained heavyweights of the 80's and 90's
I heard about Morris Reif from Bernie. I heard some funny storys and I think they were gym mates. Reif was a tough fighter in a tough era.
Burton, No way in hell did Dempsey punch as accurate or as fast as Ali did..... NO WAY!! Dempsey was also NOT the "Sharpest" of punchers, either.... He winged and looped many blows........ Christ, Tunney was actually a much more accurate and sharper shooter than Dempsey, but not nearly as powerful....... MR.BILL:deal
