Howard Clarke Interview - has an incurable brain disease.

There was a fundraiser for him last year after summer some time. There's gonna be another one this year too apparently. Very sad story

I'm glad he's accepted the wrongs he made and highlighted the people who passed him fit to box.

I'm all for Journeymen but i don't like when there losing excessive amounts of fights and being underpayed and treated like punchbags.

Really sad to see this i must say...hope the next fundraiser does him justice.

 

Thanks for the article, it really makes you think about what's important. I hope I never refer to any fighter as a "bum" ever again. Only fighters know what fighters have to go through.

 

Clarke was really decent. Pappilon was a good fighter and he put up a very good show against Vargas. Been a journeyman is no good to anyone. Journeyman should not be allowed in the sport... If your good enough to be pro then you should be good enough to rise above the also-rans without feasting on fighters on 40+ losing streaks.

 

Just looking at his record if he's getting £500 a fight for fighting some of them fighters he fought in his later career then the people who payed him that should be ashamed. He fought heavy handed prospects and took them distance for £500....disgusting.

 

Very sad, it was quite emotional to read that. Hopefully the rest of his life is as comfortable as possible.

 

This is the point I make, albeit not as well as you do.

Even someone like Peter Buckley, for a couple of years before he gave it away.... he wasn't competing, wasn't taking rounds off anyone decent.

Those that lost rounds to him either got smacked around by a decent, Carl Allen level journeyman or gave it away.

If someone is competing, then by all means let them carry on, but getting beaten 40-36 every two weeks does nothing for the sport, nor their opponent, and most importantly themselves.

As stated in the article, Clarke was getting £500 a fight.... if he was fighting three times every two months (say) that isn't going to provide a living. The sport should deduct a set amount from a fighter's purse.... almost like stamp duty, to cater for those that aren't fortunate enough to have made millions or have a trade to fall back on.

In fact, I'd go a step further, and as Rugby League has done, actively encourage participants to attend college or university and gain qualifications for their future career.

 

Not a chance he recieved that little... and if he did shame on him..

 

Yeah it does seem a small amount must say. But if true everyone's to blame including himself.

 

£500 is an excellent pay day for a journeyman...

£100 plus some expenses is nearer the norm.

Some British title challengers do not clear £2,000.

Very sad story. A career thats been right up there topin the bill at MSG, to undercard on a Sollihull dinner show. His career is a story of mismanagement. A fighter thats been used and abused by unscrupulous managers and promoters for pitifull amounts of money.
We make our own choices, but everyone needs a little support and guidance.Seems like Clarke has had neither, right to the end. Many involved in this fellas career will be taking a good look at themselves, or at least they should be.
Just a reminder of what a cruel and heartless sport this can be.....but we love it.
