Ill go with Chavez...All around he is the better fighter. I think, with a lot of difficulty, he could beat the beer salesman even if he was a 140 pounder and Carlos was his natural weight. I think there is a clear gap in overall skill and ability...It aint a gulf but its probably enough for Chavez to overcome the size discrepancy.
Palamino. Chavez slowed down considerably at welter and didnt have the power or workrate to impose his will on a bigger man like Palamino If it's over 15 i'd take Palamino by wide decision
It's a good point though that Chavez never beat anybody at 147, really no one of note. In fact his "draw" with Whitaker was probably his best performance at the weight. Palomino was beaten by Duran and Benitez, but he put up a respectable effort in both fights, and Chavez was never as good at welterweight as those two were. Considering the size factor, this fight could be more competitive than it looks to be on paper. Chavez was far greater but Palomino was the better welterweight. Size could tell in a 15 round bout against an aging Chavez over his best weight. On another note I find it incredible that a near 50 year old Palomino was still able to be competitive with Wilfredo Rivera, a pretty good fighter, in 1998. Im gonna have to favor Palomino by UD in a very competitive classic fight. Chavez is the greater fighter but like many stated, 147 wasn't Julio's best weight, while Carlos was very comfortable in that weight. Both are 2 of my all time favs, and both were excellent, vicious body punchers. Those body shots Carlos was giving Stracey were just sickening!

I think Palomino grinds Chavez down. JCC was a great fight, but just like JMM, he would be a small WW and struggle mightily against the best at that weight.
Difference is that Chavez was at 140 for a long time so the jump to Welter wouldnt have been as hard as for JMM. He also had a much better chin and power than JMM, Chavez would have done better in his prime jumping to Welter than he did later in his career. Palomino was naturally bigger and hit harder than JC but he wouldnt be able to ko Chavez:nono Way. This is the case of borderline great fighter going against an Elite great fighter. Although the bigger guy Palomino loses a decision to the greater fighter.
I don't think Chavez had the power to compete at WW. He was small and didn't have the skill needed to be a great WW. I don't think he would have won. I don't think he could KO Chavez either, but his size and body punching would have made it very difficult for Chavez.
In his prime you dont think he had the skill to be a Welter:huh He was not a slick boxer(not his style) but he had way more skills than Palomino. Althought at that weight not as much punching power. I dont think Chavez would have been a big puncher at Welter but enough to get respect , still better than average.
