Those type of fights are just about acceptable on the way up but once you're the champ....no way no how !!

 

It was obvious that JMM has maxed out at 135, and would be ineffective at 140 and above. Even his trainer can see it.

Interested to see him fight the best at 135 then.

He's the lightweight champion and doesn't look like he has any business higher than that.

 

Agreed. Although I don't buy the arguement that just because a fighter has a certain style, it justifies you avoiding him. If you avoid a fighter because of his style, you ducked him. However, this isn't the case with Marquez as the weight is clearly an issue for him. For a man who is not at his best at even 135, to turn down a fight at 140 against someone who is not a big name in the US or even a top 10 p4p is not ducking.

His trainer is just being smart. Why fight at a weight class you're not comfotable in? Why take that risk against someone like Khan. If he gets beaten (which he will if this fight happens), even if it's because of the size difference, people will say "Marquez got owned by a prospect". It will make him look bad, and we know he's much better than that.

Ricky Hatton was not comfortable at 147 but he moved up from 140 to take on Floyd, the biggest name and p4p number 1 at the time. That's why it was worth the risk of fighting at a weight he wasn't comfortable at. Khan on the other hand is not worth the risk.
boxing isn't like wrestling where a 5"2 guy can beat up a 7 ft giant. Marquez may be more skillfull than Maidana but he's also smaller. Malignaggi and Maidana are tougher fights.

Exactly. They want to Barrera him outside his weightclass in the twilight of his career coming off a loss. **** 'em. He doesn't need them, they should be focused on their own weight class with Maidana.

 

It's just not the right fight for Marquez right now - he should stay down at Lightweight where he can dominate the division

He knew that 145 was a huge stretch but the only reason he took the risk was Floyd Mayweather. A huge name, huge payday and some would argue still p4p number 1. Who is Khan in the US?

 

If you read his quotes that is what he says in so many words. He is hardly going to say "I don't want JMM to take this fight because he will be destroyed"
