What do you think of this performance?

Louis had been a pro for 25 months at the time of this thumping.

It was an amazing performance, definitly Joe Louis rise to fame is overlooked. Been a while since I actually reviewed this fight will do it on Sunday.

Is this the fight where he finished him off with 3 left hooks?

Just three things that stick out to me:
    1. That was not a subpar performance of Sharkey. He looked pretty sharp, showed a very good jab, uppercuts and hooks and a decent defense.
    2. Sharkey looks good as long as long as the fight is on the long range and Louis is not throwing combinations but when Louis get's close and starts throwing combinaions Sharkey looks scared to me, even so he landed some good punches himself.
    3. Louis looks strong. He shoves Sharkey around at time to get room for his punches.

    Impressive performance imo.

Louis really was a brutal finisher.

How old was he there? 23? One thing I notice is how composed he was for the age and Sharkey was no bum either.

Sharkey had seen better days, but I think it was bold of Louis and his team to take him coming straight off the brutal loss to Max Schmeling.

What is your oppinion of the very low left hook at 8.44? It is clarly the punch that finishes off Sharkey. Should Louis have been disqualified?

It was a good in-between sort of match for a young contender to take, especially following a bad loss. I agree.

What makes this performance by Louis so remarkable,is that this was only a couple of months after he was knocked out by Max Schmelling. That shows strength of character. A mark of the great ones. In his 70's incarnation,Muhammad Ali came back stronger after his first two losses to Frazier and Norton. Louis did the same after Schmelling.

Plus the fact that it was a name fighter didn't hurt.

On a side note I think that a prime Sharkey with his head screwed on would have given Louis some problems.

No matter how Sharkey's head was screwed on, Louis would've always punched it off.

Its a very real possibility. Sharkey was well proven against a lot of very good or even great fighters.

Sharkey said he went to the gym ,just as a businessman does , he was to all intents and purposes, a part time fighter, after his bout with Loughran, he was retired for 2 years ,and in his fight, previous to facing Louis ,was knocked down and cut.
A good performance by Louis ,a confidence booster after the Schmeling debacle, but he was not in there with a prime Sharkey.

I don't think that Janitor fealt sharkey was prime per say, only that he was a good "repair" win after a loss. I agree with him on that notion. But, your point about him being well past his best is very true.
