... 15 rounds. On their respective very best nights. Who would you pick to triumph head-to-head, and why?

*Out of curiosity which particular fight would you pinpoint as being Louis' finest display? What about Lewis?

I'll take Louis via late stoppage. I believe he was the more complete fighter and that he would have given Lewis all types of fits causing Lennox to fall off his gameplan. I don't say this lightly, because Lennox was rarely taken out of his game, but I believe Joe would prove a more versatile foe than any Lewis ever faced.

Of course, Joe would have to avoid being tagged with a big right in the early-going, but I reckon Lewis would be unable to find his comfort zone, meaning, I don't think Joe would stay at the end of his jab as so many Lewis opponents had.

    This is a tough question...

My instincts say Schmelling II and Golota...but those were both blowouts and hardly indicative of the fight I see unfolding between these two all-time greats.

Lennox Lewis made a career of taking out big punchers, Mason, Ruddock, Morrison, Klitschko, Golata, Bruno, etc. None of these men fall into the category of a Joe Louis, but then I don't think Louis ever faced a fighter who was of the calibur of Lennox either. Lennox had some off nights such as the one where he was KO'd by Oliver Mccall, but I think that came before he had truely polished up his skills by working with Steward. What's more, Mccall was a large, strong and extremely durable heavyweight by modern standards. A prime Mccall could have given a lot of champions a tough time on the right night as well.

If Louis were to penetrate Lennox's inner circle and land combinations to the body and head for most of the evening, he could certainly make it a long night for Lewis. I'm not sure that he could do it consistantly enough to make the difference though. Lennox would likely be the hardest puncher that Joe ever faced, whereas I'm not sure that I can say the same in reciprocity. Joe fought men who were equally as big and strong as Lewis such as Buddy Baer, but probably not nearly as well rounded in terms of having the complete package. Lewis would likely be the best all around fighter that Louis ever fought in terms of being balanced in skill, size, power, speed etc.

I'm going with a late round KO for Lennox.

Both men will hit the deck a few times, because their chins were occasionally susceptible against solid punchers. I just don't think Lewis will get enough opportunities early to slow Joe down late. In the late rounds, I don't like Lewis' chances against a guy who can run a complete offensive gameplan like Louis does. Between the natural aspect of tiring from the extra championship rounds and Louis' barrage, I see Louis getting a late TKO-14.

This is pretty much my take on it as well. Louis undoubtedly has better technique but I don't think it's to the extent that he can make up for the size, power and reach differences that he'd face.

Good post, realistically I think this is one of those fights where any possible senario is likely. I rate Louis higher all-time, however Lennox has a great shout in this matchup.

I'm mostly with what you've said- except that I think the fight may go the distance. Lewis could pull off a close and competitive points verdict, though he'd have to be at his very best and 100% focussed in order to do it. The workrate would need to be consistently at a high level, Lewis would need to utilise the jab to full effect throughout the fight, keep Louis off balance, and when Louis moves in throw hooks, uppercuts and crosses to the body, most importantly of all don't give him an inch in the cliches.

One lapse and Louis is capable of nailing you bigtime and finishing the job. It's a real toss up in reality, however head-to-head I'd make Lewis slight favourite due to his size, strength and skill at boxing on the outside.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I see to. My main concern with Joe Louis is that at times he had the tendency to be a bit off balance, and even got a tad sloppy. We saw some of this against Schmeling, Baer, Braddock, Galento and Mauriello. Not that I define Louis's whole career by these performances, but I can't help but think that if he got sloppy or off balance against Lennox, that he would end up paying for it, and unlike the others, Lewis may possibly have finished him off.

If Joe can get used to ceeding ground in the centre of the ring and can accept and plan for being manhandled he would knock out Lennox. They are intagibles though, and there is no way to be sure, but that would be my bet.

I don't think Lewis was ever in with a better composite puncher than him and that would be the case here.

Rahman II is Lewis' best performance.

Schmeling II is Louis' best performance.

Very hard to call.. Lewis has size, power, ring generalship, long sharp jab. Louis also has a very good jab, power, brutal combinations and economical fighting. I think this is one of those 50/50 matchups that could go either way.

A bit of a strong term to use, don't you think. Care to elaborate and expand on why you think this would be the case?

I think that Louis would have too many tools for Lennox to handel.

Whatever strategy Lewis employs he will ultimately find himself beaten to the punch and countered. Louis will not let him get set up to unload as he wishes.

Louis would become smaller as he came towards Lennox and then explode in his face beating him on the draw. At this stage Louis's ability to work in a phone both would be the deciding factor. Make no mistake Louis was like a buzz saw when he got going and could land 70 clean punches in the space of a round.

If Lennox decides to play a mobile game Louis will force him onto the front foot while cutting down the ring on him. Eventualy this will draw Lewis into the counterpunching exchange that he cannot win.
