Do you think Wayne (Marion Michael Morrison; great uncle to Tommy Morrison) could have made a fighter? At 6'4" and over 200 pounds, Wayne was considered America's tough guy and hero. In The Quiet Man he played 'Trooper' Sean Thornton, a heavyweight who retires after killing a man in the ring and ends up back in his native Ireland, only to take on his brother in law in a bare knuckle battle for the ages. Personally, I have no doubt that Wayne was a hard ******* in his own right, but I dont think he would have beaten Victor McLaglen in a real fight, even if Wayne was 20 years younger than him. McLaglen was the first white hope to fight Jack Johnson after he won the title and was also a circus strongman. But let's suppose that after playing college ball, that instead of acting he pursued it was boxing. Do you think Wayne would of made it as a fighter, or is this question just too hard to answer with certainity? I know my dad told me of his encounter with John Wayne while on 30 day leave from Vietnam one year, and he saw 'The Duke' in a bar in Las Angeles and some ******* came up to Wayne and said something to the effect of "I bet you're not as tough as you play in the movies", to which Wayne got off his bar stool and stood to his full height, towering over the man and said "Do you want to find out?", to which he backed down.
I like Wayne too..... But I hate that film......... However, Eastwood is my ALL-TIME favorite cowboy...... "The Quiet Man" is NOT a good boxing film from our past.......... NOPE!! MR.BILL
Let's think about this. Be a star in dozens of major films over 6 decades, bang the best broads in Hollywood, drink to your heart's content, sail around the world on your off-time... or get punched in the face.
When the film was being made (in cong, co mayo) there was a guy from belfast who was hired to 'look after' Wayne and big victor. His name was Silver mc Kee from the markets area and by half the stories ive heard of this guy, they would have been better making a film on him instead. I like the movie myself but i think its just an irish thing and it didnt travel well. The area still makes a living of the back of that film
I think its offensive to people who actualy boxed to sugest somebody who only "looks tough" and hasnt boxed might make it as a boxer. having looks is enough for acting -if you can act. having the looks (of a fighter) isnt worth **** in boxing. In most cases if a guy hasnt boxed he cant box. If a guy hasnt dove a car he cant drive a car.
My kids couldn't drive when they were midteens, but they sure stole the car a lot and drove on down the road.
Great movie star, let's leave it at that .... Here's a little fact about teh Duke. He was the perfect age to fight in the WW but managed not to ... another great hero ...
