Forrest fights tall behind a good jab. Theres a reason Mosley couldnt get close to Forrest, and it wasnt because he was headbutting and throwing mad hooks. The jab sets up everything and it did.
Here is my opinion of you assessment. It is ridiculous. Roberto Duran struggled against Wilfred Benitez, Kirklang Lang, Esteban DeJesus and Sugar Ray Leonard because they were skilled fighters. Does that make him lacking ring IQ. At the top level, guys are going to struggle against elite opposition. Mosley has taken on elite opposition, and all fighters have flaws. It doesn't make them not impressive. Yeah Shane may not be able to beat Mayweather, but it won't be because he wasn't a smart fighter. It will because Floyd is a better fighter. Did you ever watch Shane Mosley -De La Hoya I? Didn't Mosley use footwork, angles and speed to beat Oscar. Mosley was more impressive then Floyd was in beating Oscar, and he was more decisive. Yes Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright outboxed Shane, but they had height and strength on him. Cotto outboxed Shane in spots but it wasn't a dominate performance by Cotto, it was a fight that could have easily been seen in Mosley's favor. De La Hoya outboxed Mosley in spots in the 2nd fight, but he outboxed Floyd in spots in their fight. Mosley is an agressive boxer puncher, not a a pure boxer. It is just not his style. It doesn't mean he doesn't have a good ring IQ. He just doesn't want to fight from the outside. Some of the greatest fighters of all time weren't half the boxers Mosley was, but Mosley seems to be considered not a very good boxer. He may not be Pernell Whitker or Mayweather in terms of pure boxing. But how many other fighters of this era had the offensive ablilty he has. How many throw a better left hook to the body? How many throw a better right hand? I can name a few, but not that many. Like I said, Mosley is a superb fighter, a great fighter, but he is not Leonard or Robinson.
Here is why Forrest beat Mosley. He knew how to maximize his height minimize Mosley's speed. Also he HAD the power to keep Mosley from getting close. Forrest beat Mosley in the Olympic Trials, and he sparred numerous rounds with him. He knew exactly how to beat Shane, and he had the tools to do it. Winky Wright was just way to big and strong for Shane. It wasn't a case of him outboxing Mosley with counters and moving. He just pushed Mosley around the ring with his right jab. Both of those fights hold no comparision to what Floyd brings to the table. IMO, Forrest and Wright would have beaten Floyd. Bigger and Stronger and skilled enough to move Floyd around. The fight where people can actually compare is the Cotto fight. If Floyd is effective with his movement and a jab he should beat Shane. But he is in for a grueling fight. Mayweather is used to being the guy who comes on strong in the late rounds, but that is Mosley's forte. If Mosley doesn't age overnight this will be interesting and a definite test for Money May. He deserves a lot of credit for taking this fight, and he will deserve credit if he wins.
Oscar doesn't fight on the backfoot often. He keeps a high tight guard and fights tall. Oscar is almost alway the bigger guy in his fights. He doesn't need much footwork. I am not saying that shane is dumb fighter but an above average in the boxing IQ dept. He gets a B in the IQ dept and an A for power, speed, and chin. B for footwork too and defense. I give FLoyd A in everything except power. Nobody likes to being in a fight where you can't hurt ur opponent and they can hurt you. And that is the only thing that shane got going against floyd. If Shane can't land often, i think he would be taken to school.
Shane is not at his best, but he's definately suitable opponent. If he isn't, then Mayweather might as well retire. Pac is probably the only other guy at WW, besides Floyd, that people would say is better than Mosley. And I bet most people would see a fight between Pac and Mosley as a competitive fight.
Agreed, Mosley could very well be taken to school by Floyd. It is Floyd's toughest challenge of his career on paper though. But Floyd has risen to the challenge before.
wow great find! this was the second mosley fight i watched and was the one to make me a fan (partly because i thought he had a cool fade!).
BOXING fans such as myself are saying Mosley is older and not as good as he was circa 2000. *******s would just say "**** VOID!! MOSLEY BY KO!!! WOOOOOOO!!!" Learn the difference.:good
Forgot just how damn good Mosley was back then, damn those reflexes are sharp. No way is that the same guy in the Margarito, Cotto fights. PBF UD.
Shane is about 10 years off his prime. He has declined but has something left, but not enough to take out Floyd
i definitely don't think he's better physically, but he is hungrier, smarter, and stronger mentally. having brother nazim in his corner helps a lot too.
Mosley's not as good as he was in the early 2000s, but still a top fighter, and the best fight Mayweather could take after Bloodgate.
In no way is he better now than he was. That is ridiculous. It doesn't mean he's not the champ now or that Floyd won't get credit. It just means to use common sense.
This post is really far off base and really excuse ridden for Mosleys shortcomings. Forrest knew how to minimize Shanes speed?? How?? By pumping his jab and keeping Mosley offset?? In regards to Wright, pushing around a fighter with your jab is outboxing him. Wright wasnt way to big and strong for Mosley he was just also technically very good and knew how to keep Shane in check by using his jab in the same way. Mosley just has a real problem with technical boxers. Who else has Shane beaten that has the jab of Forrest and Wright? Oscar had a decent jab but it was never the main focuse of his offense, it was always the lefthook. Floyd absolutely fights closer to Wright and Forrest, working off his jab and lead power shots and fighting at range to keep his opponent offset. If anything DLH is the one who fights closer to Cotto, getting closer and mixing it up more with less emphasis on the jab to setup his shots.
He obviously isn't as good as he was in his prime. Prime Mosley would have imposed himself on someone like Miguel Cotto and stopped him. Anyone who thinks this version is as good as the DLH 1 version is an idiot, there is no evidence for it. Pure rubbish, and no he is not smarter now, where was this newfound ring generalship when he was being out boxed by Cotto? One dominant performance against Margarito (where his physical traits were simply too much for him) does not support any of your bull****.
