But Jones never was the champ.. To be champ you need o bea the champ and tha was DM, so Jones seled with beeing the number one contender. Who ever did not wanting to become champ outside of him?
Well, DM was the champ when he was active. Same with Ottke, he was always ranked number one and above Joe C. Beating most guys Joe beat before him and unifying maybe a reason for that. And while Calzaghe beat his guys more empathically Ottke is known to lose rounds and run when he thought he had the fight in the bag. And no, the DM thing is not overstated. DM was the champ. Period. Imagine Ali never fighting Liston but beating all the top contenders. Same situation.
I had it 8-4 for Jones. Pretty clear win but it was clearly visible that Jones was more the fighter he would be known as later on than Hopkins. In hindsight of course.
Who was the regarded as the best fighter in the world at the time? Roy. Not DM. Who was the bigger draw? Roy by a mile. Who needed the fight the most? DM.
I know you live in Europe, but at that time, the WBO title wasnt much. Jones by far was considered "the" man at LH. Dariusz started off making his case by fighting the guys that Jones was beating. It did create buzz for a Jones DM fight, but DM started struggling and losing following that plan and the fight basically was forgotten. There was no reason why Jones needed to go to Europe to take the WBO title, and you cant compare Liston Ali to Jones DM
Was DM considered the best fighter in the world regardless of weight class? No. Why didn't DM come to the US to fight Jones then?
Jones held the three most recognizeable titles. DM should have come to the US to win THE championship. I dont know how anyone could dispute that?
