Paul Briggs to make boxing comeback against Danny Green By Christian Nicolussi From: This content is protected February 16, 2010 12:00AM PAUL "Hurricane" Briggs will formally announce his comeback in the ring today at a press conference with IBO cruiserweight world champion Danny Green at Star City Casino. Briggs hasn't fought for two years since beating South Africa's Rupert van Aswegen which came six months after losing his WBC light heavyweight title to Tomasz Adamek in Chicago. After his monumental win over Roy Jones Jr in Sydney last December, Green has had trouble finding opponents with both Bernard Hopkins and Antonio Tarver knocking back his approaches. Briggs should prove an interesting challenge for Green - having twice fought Adamek for a world title in 2006 and 2005 only to lose on points on both occasions. Green, meanwhile, recently challenged Anthony Mundine to an Anzac Day showdown to avenge his 2006 loss at the Sydney Football Stadium - however, The Man has been surprisingly silent in response to Green's invitation. Briggs rediscovered his passion for boxing after working as a trainer on the successful Fox 8 reality show, The Contender, won by former rugby league player Garth Wood in a hard-fought final bout against Kariz Kariuki.
Wow, this article suggests Green will be his comeback fight? That's a big ask after being out for 2 years due to health issues.
Agree with you. I'm sure in Briggsy's mind he's all good and doing it for the right reasons - but geez I hope it works out OK for him. ...it's not like a golf comeback where the worst thing that can happen is you make a fool of yourself.
paul is done, i hope its a handshake fight... "lets spar for 12 rounds kinda thing" id hate to see him stand up to a **** load of punishment from green.
hmmm, surely there is a warm up fight for briggs b4 this. - otherwise could be a bad night for him. Mind you if anyone deserves a solid payday its him. Don't know about the article integrity though - Briggs never held the WBC lt hvy title?
i swear ive heard this in so many articles where they say briggs was the world champ. i was starting to question myself as i never thought he got there but definitely deserved one.
Makes Danny's Mundine Anzac Day challenge look all a bit scripted now doesn't it, considering 5-odd days later he's pulling a press conference to announce a Briggs fight. Blah, blah, blah...
Briggsy reckons an attack on him by a thug has got him keen to fight again. From goldcoast.com.au: Thug attack gave Briggs `Green' light to resume Pat McLeod | January 29th, 2010 Paul `Hurricane' Briggs is making a surprise comeback to the ring and may take on world cruiserweight champion Danny Green WORLD boxing champion Danny Green has been placed on `Hurricane' alert. The man who blitzed legend Roy Jones Jr in a first-round shock in December could be defending his world cruiserweight crown against comeback surprise Paul `Hurricane' Briggs by mid-2010. Gold Coast-based Briggs yesterday confirmed he was stepping back in the ring, but would not speculate on who his first opponent would be. However the rumour mill has already cranked into overdrive matching Briggs and Green in a dream Down Under showdown. "I am not saying who I want to face first up, I just know I want to fight," said Briggs. "I retired three years ago, but today, right now, I feel like I can do anything. "Something happened just recently that made me realise how much I love fighting. A switch was flicked ." That 'something' was a street fight in Coolangatta. Briggs said he was on a night out two weeks ago when a thug attacked him. "I definitely did not instigate anything. All I did was defend myself," he said. The thug picked the wrong bloke to harass. Briggs knocked him out. Although he says he is a 'family man' who does not condone street violence the incident awoke the warrior. He is back in training and keen to step back into the ring. "My family is behind me. If they were not I would not be doing this," he said. This content is protected
As far as how they work the media, I don't think their is much difference between Mundine and Green nowadays.
One way or the other it's getting boxing into the papers, and yes they are both at it. Interesting that when Green announced his challenge to Mundine it got big coverage - large picture etc. By contrast I had to search the Internet to find Mundine's response - did not make the Herald Sun in Melbourne, not even a line.
