Exactly the same. :good I think we can say though, anyone who ranks Jones among the top 5 at LHW are overrating him and inside the top 25 P4P...are also overrating. The general consensus seems to be on point so...are we really underrating Jones?
Why should DM have went to the US? He was a name in Germany and Poland. Earned very good money there. In the US he would have to make name again, similar what Abraham is doing right now. And Jones never really tried to get the fight with DM. If Jones was so sure of winning why didn'the come to Germany beating him there. Most great champs did something like that. Look at Ali. Those are not titles but belts. Not more worth than the European or Commonwealth championship 40/50/60 years ago. He was the number one contender for years but never fought the champ. It's similar to the Dempsey/Wills siuation really with the only difference that the contender never really wanted to fight the champ and not the other way around.
He did beat beltholders not THE champ. btw. I don recognize Hopkins' or Calzaghe's defence records because most of them were for belts not the championship.
Baldomir was the champion at welterweight because he had defeated the champion (Judah), who had defeated the champion (Spinks), who had defeated the champion(mayorga) who had completely unified the title both by winning the three major belts but by defeating its best fighter. Floyd could have fought the aforementioned fighters at 147lbs..an maybe should have...But doing so wasn't going to make him champion of the division.
Yep. That's why PBF was the champ ther until he retired. Jones did not fight Rocchigiani despite Rocchiginai already beeing in the USA for the fight. It's no that Jones only ducked DM. :bart And DM cleaned out the division as much as Jones but DM was the champ, Jones not. So the challenger should beg the number one contender for a fight?
Depends on where you place him. Not everyone places him as a Top 10-15 LH, and at that point, Jones does start to become underrated.
I don't think pompous is the right adjective. Maybe an antagonizer (If that's a word). After all, you were the one that just said that Jersey Joe had no credibility (That sounds more along the line of pompous).
Because unfortunately boxing runs through the US moreso at that time. Even though its world championship boxing, thats hardly the case, as proof by what you said with the euro guys getting their titles taken away so easily. Abraham is doing the right thing because he wants that recognition, DM was content with the accolades he received at home and from a fringe title.
Just because a select few don't rate Jones among the top 15 at Light Heavyweight doesn't necessarily mean we can consider the man is underrated. We should go by the consensus, and by all accounts, on this thread anyway, Jones' legacy seems to be in correct perspective. For all of the man's athletic ability, and ring accomplishments, I really don't see enough names there. Those who are satisfied with his resume completely disregard that Hopkins was yet to grow into a great technical fighter at the time those two fought. Jones was a great fighter straight from the Olympics, Hopkins needed experience.
I rank him #12 as a LHW. P4P I imagine he's at least in my top 50-60 I don't think he's underrated. Many think he's overrated, too. I'm neutral.
