"When Pryor asked me to train him. He was afraid going into the rematch with Arguello because Panama Lewis had been arrested and put in jail at the time, and he was the guy who trained him for the first fight, and even though he never admitted it in so many words, he told me that they were basically getting by with some kind of things that were not legal."----Emanuel Steward
Well, that was against a green-as-grass Hearns who couldn't even throw the right hand properly at that stage. And amateur accolades can hardly count.
He's one of the most achieved 140 lb. fighters ever, which among junior divisions is pretty decent historically, yet it's still a junior division nonetheless. He can be mentioned as a "great" but among a lower-tier great. Not among guys like Leonard, Duran, Chavez, etc...but among guys more on the level of a Tszyu or Pedroza. I agree that he does get overrated way too often. Not only on this board, but also by publications like The Ring, who ranked over 30 spots ahead of Hearns. His resume is relatively weak and he underachieved due to his personal demons (not because the big names supposedly were scared of him, he actually got offered fights with Duran and Leonard).
Pryor benefits from a definite double standard. Look at how Margarito (rightfully) gets ripped apart for trying to cheat against Mosley, but Pyror is actually caught on film cheating in the midst of a fight, and so many people either excuse it (saying "He was probably going to win anyway" or "Whatever it was probably wasn't that big a deal") or ignore it. It also annoys me how certain people just blindly pick him to win any hypothetical matchup at 140 without any thought or consideration put into it. For example, when someone asks who would win between him and Pacquiao, there are people who will just say "Pryor kills him" - nevermind that Pryor looked like **** against southpaws like Kameda and Hinton, and probably should've lost to Hinton. Pryor is one of those fighters who gets rated more on his reputation than what he actually was and did in the ring.
ALG simply for the fact he dominated his weightclass during his era. However, he is one of those guys people think of highlight reels as opposed to the entire fighter. His best win was against a featherweight, and Pyror's defence was crap. He had a good chin, but I doubt he could have taken too many shots from real hard hitters like Chavez, Duran, Tszyu or DLH. I also doubt he could handled s slick south paw like Whitaker.
I just reviewed Pryor's defense against Gaetan Hart and Pryor looked sloppy as all hell, but he got the KO win.... Hart was out-classed and totally limited in ability.... Hart's only asset was his conditioning..... Hart's speed and skills stunk...... Hart was a Canadian champion who once killed a dude in the ring...... Still, he looked ordinary against Pryor........ bull**** he kicked his ass in their re-match, all you ****ing conspirocy theorists, no the bottle i mixed, you are basing your ****ing opinion on that sentence. It could have been water and honey
Considering Panama Lewis' rap sheet, I too suspect some hanky panky with the black bottle scene from '82..... Lewis claims Seltzer water to aid an upset stomach, but that sounds sketchy to me.... :verysad:nono MR.BILL
Kostya had big problems with guys who put a lot of pressure on him. Kostya was baddass against boxers who tried to stay at range, because he had a long right hand that was very accurate, and he had tremendous timing. When he fought a rough & tumble fight against Vince Philips he was stopped. When an old Kostya fought a rough & tumble bout with the Nature Boy he got stopped. I really like the guy; however, he definitely had weaknesses, and I think the style matchup favors Pryor. Also, Pryor would likely have loaded gloves and stuff like that. hahaha
While I agree that Pryor had speed, flash & power at 140, he was also sloppy and wide open for counter shots...... I think "Tszyu & Chavez" were more technical and more disciplined as Ring Generals, but Pryor would have a good chance at out-pointing them dudes with his endless aggression.... MR.BILL
