Why Felix Savon didn't decide to turn pro?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MyStyle, Feb 15, 2010.

  1. Savon does have international fame or we all wouldn't know what a beast he was. I was having a convo about him with a some stranger not that long ago.

i have no way of proving it.

it would have been well over 20 years now.
i never make things up and i am 100% sure the fight took place and went down as i said, but of course you will have to take my word on it , if that is good enough.

Savon always said he was a rich man in Cuba, he owned a small home with a back yard , i have a loving family and i need not want for anything.. The adolation he earned was more than the money was worth to him.. He always seemed devoted and never once showed interest.. Cash was offered for him to go to box Evander Holyfield .. i did hear it came from Top Rank.. Savon was promised close to 1.5 million....... Nothing came of it at all..

I'll tell you why, since I'm Cuban and I was in my 20's in those times and I remember Roberto Balado perfectly well.

Roberto Balado was one of the best boxers ever in Cuba. He was a heavyweight, but with the speed and skills of a lightweight. He didn't have a lot of punch, but the man was incredibly difficult to hit. He was a pleasure to watch. He could, and he did, outbox any other heavyweight I know of. He developed his skills when he was a bit old; he lost against Savon twice I think, but when he was very young.

The day he died, boxing lost some glamor to me.

Well, I'm sure Savon would be considered a great amateur, but you're missing my point, which is basically that Amateur boxing and Pro boxing are different. Success in one does not guarantee the same success in the other.

He didn't turn pro because he was gay?:huh

He didn't come out untill after he retired so I don't think that would have mattered.

O no I have to disagree. Maybe you disagree(d) but it was no bullsh*t. Balado was amazing. A heavyweight Sweet Pea.
    But that's my opinion;)

Yes, Balado was one in a million. I remained awake through countless and endless boring fights just to watch Balado. Mind you, for those who don't know, a boxing bout in Cuba used to go through all the 12 divisions in order, 48, 51, ... 81, 91, +91... And just to watch the Man. :-(
