Had a lengthy debate about this one yesterday and I'm still conviced that Quarry would stop the Rock. Remember he was just as prone to cuts as Quarry was.:bbb

I think Quarry suffered from cuts worse when you look at how bad his cuts was. Rocky did cut, but not as bad as most protest. He was never in danger of a bout being stopped due to cuts from punches (Keyword "punches"). Quarry was stopped early because of this.

If Quarry fought in a phone booth type fight like he did against Frazier then he would get stopped even earlier. Marciano stops/KOs him either way.

quary had talent and was game. He had power, durabilty and fast hands. Often there are fighters who come along who have atributes that match or are beter than those that champions have. Just as often however they dont make it. this certainly does not make them a champion in another era. This is jerry quarry with bells on. Sometimes you can be as good as a champion but not good enough to be a champion.
why? Because sometimes talent is not enough. Lots of factors make a champion, if you lack one you dont make champion. In any era.
If there is such a thing as a poor champion he will have that odd element that all champions have that quary lacked. Its almost undefinable. Maybe its simply staying cool and focused on the big nights.
Quary was great, he just lacked the big night temperment. Thats enough.
Would he beat Marciano? absolutly not. no way. Marciano had too much focus and drive and more durabilty than quarry had. Sure quary could box nicer, marciano just had too much consistancy and dominated at the top level.

:deali love jerry but he was exactly the kind of opponent marciano would have wanted and would have eaten up. he had trouble with cuties like walcott and brilliant, durable boxers like charles.

Bingo. Well said. It's the tricky cutey, mover boxers that are the fighters that trouble Rocky the most. Not the guys who would be willing to engage like Quarry would.

Regardless of who wins, its still a great dream fight for the ages.... Jerry Quarry fits in well with the 1950s heavyweights... Jerry Quarry at an even 6' tall and 195 solid pounds would be considered a big boy of the 50s heavyweight scene....

All in all, the great Rocco Marciano prolly wins, but Jerry Quarry would give hell to Marciano for as long as the fight lasted.... No walk in the park for Marciano.... No way, Jose....

    NOTE:

I've already gone on file claiming I believe Joseph Frazier would prolly hammer Rocco Marciano in a wild affair if both dogs met in a time machine at their peaks....... WORD!

Too much sustained pressure for Jerry here, and he'd succumb in the late rounds, as Marciano asserted his pace. Even if both men miraculously evaded any facial damage, Quarry would wilt precipitously under Rocky's continual bombardment.

Call me nuts but I see this as a 50/50 fight. Quarry was a hell of a competitor. Rocky would have to be at his best as well as Jerry. Jerry had fast hands and could box and move when he wanted to. Quarry could punch too, and take alot of punishment. In the end though I would pick Rocky via late round stoppage. Maybe I should call this more like 60/40 in favor of Rocky but it's no guarantee. At some point Jerry's Irish would do him in. It's the nature of the beast.

This is how i see it. marciano was more proven but would strugle just as any great champion would with quarrys A-game.

I think Frazier's hook was harder than Walcott's, so I see Frazier knocking Marciano's block off in a rugged fight....... Plus, Frazier would double and triple up on the hook, where as Walcott was a better two-fisted fighter.....

This would be brutal and ugly.

It would also be verry bad for Quarry.

Nobody around Marciano's size is going toe to toe with him and surviving unless they either have the firepower to take him out relativley early or a Chuvaloesque chin.

Quarry would have his monments and put up a brave fight, but he would end up in a similar state to Rex Layne.

To put what he is up against into perspective, Marciano probably hit harder than Joe Frazier.

After a terrific first half of the bout Rocky would start to beat the crap out of him ... likely a late round stopage ..
