I don't agree at all. Pac looked troubled in Round 1 by the jab. However, in hindsight, Round 1 may have been nothing more than a feeler round for Manny (which he really doesn't do all that often), because his punch output was abnormally low. Round 2, Cotto's jab is already defeated because Manny beats Cotto to the punch with straight lefts, knowing full well that Cotto's intent is to counter with the jab. Then, Pac also starts to mix in right hooks over the top of Cotto's jab if Cotto tries to jab offensively. Eventually, Cotto's jab was pretty much gone. He wouldn't throw it with any real power behind it, so Manny doesn't even bother and just walks through them for the rest of the fight.
I believe it may have more to do with timing Manny's combos. Say he tries to throw a combo but somewhere in there you tag him with a couple of stiff shots to offset that momentum and tie him up. Nobody tries to tie him up. So far they have all tried to walk him down. Oscar, Cotto, and Hatton. Obviously that doesn't work. We will have to wait to see what Clottey does. But I think he will fight the same way he always does, only that he won't be knocked out in the end. Only fighter with the mental ability to not fall into Manny fight pace is Floyd. Shane wouldn't be able to. That is why I can't wait for Manny to fight Floyd. Nothing else matters.
Trying to interrupt Manny's combos with punches is extremely risky, which is why Hatton and Cotto went straight into holding in order to stop the combo. Unfortunately, that doesn't help you at all win rounds unless you're clearly winning a round already with not much time left in the round.
I had a feeling Pac's chin was that good. In the 2nd Marquez fight, JMM landed a left hook flush on Pac's jaw and the most it did was put him off balance. Hussein and Yeshmagambetov both put Pac on the canvas with flush shots to the head, but all it really did was **** Pac off as he went ape **** on both of them when he got back up. IMO, the difference in this fight was that Cotto couldn't hurt Pac enough to slow down his usual high punch output and land rate. Just look at the punch stats. Pac didn't overpower Cotto, he just outworked and outlanded him, almost 2-1.
A good thread from a known Pac sceptic. I actually think Pac has been horribly lowballed for that win. Cotto had outboxed Mosley, edged out Clottey, outfought Margarito for about 6 rounds before being ground down by loaded gloves, and demolished a raft of quality fighters at 140. No-one has ever owned him like Pac has, and this was a guy who was fighting at superfeatherweight less than 2 years ago. A truly all-star performance IMO.
Seen the fight a few times, everytime Cotto boxed smart he did well. Whenever he saw red mist an tried to go toe-to-toe Pacman beat him to the punch. The second knockdown was sublime, what a punch.
yeah it was a pretty incredible performance. i still haven't rewatched it (no homo ). i was amazed at how fast pac was. i was literally having a hard time seeing the punches he was throwing and cotto sure as hell couldn't see them. all of a sudden cotto would just be down or his head would snap back and i would just be like holy **** did he really just hit him? amazing stuff.
its a trip to see just how effective steriods are, 1st time I saw it was when Toney fought Holyfield, but this fight was just crazy.....
