No doubt in my mind that Benn won more rounds in that fight and it is perhaps the greatest display of heart and determination that I have ever seen. If only it hadn't ended like it did people would be comparing it against the all time great fight.

Unfortunately the ending make such comparisons tasteless.

couldn't resist it could you? Leonard wasn't a huge favourite and considered superior, like the topic starter asked for. And it was in no way, shape or form a dominant performance. Let alone a completely dominant performance, like the topic starter asked for. It was a close fight, Robertard.

all good choices but this one really, it ended up being a good show but if foreman hadnt faded it wouldlnt have been that impressive

Well, the win is still only over Gerald Mclellan - hard puncher but not exactly an ATG at his weight. Almost losing to a decent but not great fighter isn't really good enough, even though it was an epic display of guts by Benn. On that logic we'd have Gatt Ward I as the most impressive fight - maybe for heart, but certainly not for boxing skill or quality of opposition.

Agree with your 2nd pick, that's an excellent one and I was also shocked how much he crushed him.

With my forever heavyweight head on, the first one that springs straight to mind is Max Schmeling's brilliant defeat of prime time Joe Louis.

After that Ali-Foreman (everytime I watch that fight I find myself pretending to be the comentator and saying things out loud like "this is just incredible!!! - what an amazing amazing performance!!!" and even "what a hero!!" and "what a cocky kid!!!" and "how is he doing this??!!! How can he take that kind of punishment to the body???!!

And maybe even Buster over Iron Mike (but then again maybe not because Mike was on another planet altogether that night)

Great pick! That was a really good win. Schmeling & co spotted a flaw in Joe's technique, then Max exploited it thoroughly for 10 rounds to win against the better, younger man. The 2nd fight shows what probably should have happened :D

Yeah but McClellan was rated a top ten Pd 4 Pd fighter at the time,
Gatti and Ward were never close to be considered in the top ten Pd 4 Pd at any point in there careers, thats the difference,

You're correct, i was taking a bit of licence there by including the intangibles such fight odd's & the public perception of the day that Foreman was a man killer, yeh it's a fine line between impressive & shock victories & i suppose SHOCK would be the handle of the day.

Well, there's two types of impressive victory - the one where fighter A just crushes fighter B, makes it look easy; and the one where it's life and death, and the winner only just manages to take it with great heart and a fighting comeback.

To me, the first type of win shows a better fighter - he's good enough that he doesn't *need* to comeback and show great heart to win. He probably has that too, he just doesn't need to rely on it. Whereas the second type shows a warrior, but someone whose skills weren't good enough to keep them out of trouble or dispatch the opponent before getting into trouble.

The second type may be more exciting but IMO the first type shows the better boxer.
