Many of todays boxing fans when reading the writings of boxing experts of yesterday, regard their opinions ,coming from old relics of the past...Well I'm on older relic , and stillable to be objective, and evaluate new vs old...Flesh and blood were the same yesterday as today...

All their real stats are in there including the weight difference so I think this is similar to the result. I think Dempsey would adopt some Tunney tactics early to stifle Mike's fast start. Then turn it up in the mid-to-late. With some potential lucky counter shots to hurt Mike as his stamina fades. Dempsey was at his best when he was fighting out of fear. In the biography he wrote himself he didn't remember some of his most dramatic KO's because he was fighting on pure animal instinct at the time. The way he fought Willard was partially out of fear also. He was the biggest guy he fought, bigger than Fulton or Morris

Ever tried to kick a rain soaked old style football? , compare that to todays footballs?

I don't agree that todays boxers are a class above the boxers of yester year.

Impossible to pick a winner. Similar styles, in terms of speed, aggressiveness and explosiveness from the opening bell anyway. I think Dempsey was the better fighter, lighter on his feet and with a greater use of different ranges, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'd win. Too much punching power and skill in both men's hands to confidently pick a winner.

Well by 1989 Rooney was long gone and Jim Jacobs was dead so the transformation into an Earnie Shavers clone was almost complete...

Why 1989 Tyson? Sure physically he still looks peaked, yet he lacked the style, skills and mentality of when he was in his original team where Kevin Rooney was trainer. In the first Bruno fight Tyson's skills had become diminished due to poor quality training from inferior trainers (Snowell & Bright) and a huge lack of discipline. Indeed, new undisciplined Tyson had emerged who recklessly charged at the powerful Bruno with no regard for his own defence in terms of blocking and head movement (even when he did use head movement it was slower and lacked precision). He acted like Bruno's power punches meant nothing, even after being buckled by a hard right in the 1st round. He failed to cover up in most of the exchanges and his punches were wide and often wild, singular head-hunting blows. Plus degraded combination punching seemed to be reserved for finishing Bruno. Not to mention he had the lack of mental preparation that his old team provided and when the going gets tough Snowell will be unable to produce useful advice. In my opinion if Dempsey can focus on using his excellent head movement to avoid now telegraphed Tyson-bombs and goes for fast combination punching to the body until Tyson is grinded down, then Dempsey takes it by late KO/TKO.

I think the changes in Tyson's style are exaggerated.
Even under Rooney he was prone to neglect the head-movement, and walk straight in, and look more and more for the one big punch as the fight went on. Plus he'd get a bit wild sometimes when he had his man hurt. Against Ribalta 1986 :

    And against Tubbs 1988 :

The Tubbs fight is one of Tyson's peak performances, but I noticed how his head movement is rarely effective and he walks straight in a lot, and he's knocked off balance several times by Tubbs.
Tyson picks his shots well but often no more than 1 or 2 at a time. A great performance by Tyson but even at his peak I can see evidence of those faults that people claim only appeared after 1988.
It's clear as day on film.

They may be similar in styles but Dempsey has the proven heart if not a slick boxer. How long would Tyson have gone on in a hopeless fight vs Tunney?

Good point about the difference in refereeing standards, modern v. old school.
    People often overlook that.

Perhaps at his absolute peak. But not past his prime or in sloppy form, or rusty, (as Dempsey was).

Based on what? Like he took out Douglas? Tunney isn't Marvis Frazier.
