It would take a very top form Dempsey to beat Tunney but I feel that version would....Is that Jim Corbett working with Gene?
Problem was Marciano never shot blanks and his power was known to wear you down he would batter Genes arms, neck shoulders and head and Gene was never in the ring with a puncher with the relentless style of Marciano, Greb was relentless but as far as power was a BB gun compared to the power of Marciano......Marciano was a rhythm breaker and it was he who usually made the boxers look bad...Walcott, LaStarza and Matthews...I love Tunney and rate him high but he is in deep here.
Marciano was also much slower than Greb ... the problem with rating Tunney is that his heavyweight career was so short ... We never saw him fight 15 as a heavyweight. WE do know what Rocky could do and that is fight 15 brutal rounds throwing bombs all the way ... I like Tunney's style to beat Rocky's but just did not see enough of Gene at heavyweight to give him this nod ... still, an extremely close match up ..
Moore's legs were not what they were ,and ,at their best, they were never really speedy. Tunney had great foot speed, and underated power, he could throw short rips to the body and heart ,jab you all night and clip you with a crisp right cross. He would NOT be trading with Rocky ,but boxing on the retreat and ,apart from, arguably Ali who did it better?
thats bull****. charles looked beter against satterfield and wallace by a long way. charles who fought rocky matched tunney at worse.
Dempsey showed he could beat Tunney in the rematch..... But Dempsey's style was better suited for a man age 22 to 27........ By age 31 and 32, Dempsey had regressed....... And, odd as it may seem, his hiatus from boxing during 1924 and 1925 was more of a hinderance rather than a rest period...... Instead of coming back refreshed, Dempsey came back rusty as a door nail in a haunted house..... Of course the "Issue" of Jack Dempsey being sick to his stomach the morning of his '26 loss to Eugene Tunney up in Pittsburgh was prolly a factor, as well....... BUT! Dempsey was also struggling with Jack Sharkey prior to kayoing his ass with a sucker hook in round 7 later in 1927...... By 1926, and age 31, Dempsey's skills and reflexes were faded..... HOWEVER! In his peak yrs of 1919 to 1923, he'd have eaten Tunney for lunch.......... MR.BILL
You could atleast try to point out why exactly you think Charles looked better against Satterfield and Wallace rather than just call it "bull****". That's not going to convince anybody. The Ezzard who fought Marciano did not match Tunney by any means. Charles clinched a lot, fought in close and used minimal footwork. Not that he didn't use his feet, he got in and out as well as he could while conserving energy, but nothing comparable to what Tunney would offer. Here you go with the complete Satterfield and Wallace fights, everyone can decide for themselves: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXz8CZDE7XI[/ame] Charles-Wallace: http://www.megavideo.com/?d=dnu532se And Marciano - Charles I on top of it: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oYS0Fpsd7I[/ame] Where are the legs that he moved 15 rounds with against Joe Louis? Are you seriously trying to claim that a 32 year old Ezzard Charles was better than a Charles in his late 20's?
My guess is he'd have to break Tunney and Marciano all night long - after Ali (and probably Johnson) nobody used the clinch as effectively as Tunney.
This doesn't mean that Charles didn't clinch. Marciano himself complained about it. [dm]x5svbd_rocky-marciano-vs-ezzard-charles-i_sport[/dm]
exactly they were 2 electrifying ko's for Charles and Satterfield land some good shots in a 1st rd exchange but EZZARD SHOWED his CLASS with an electrifying KO....and the Wallace KO over a 6"3 heavyweight with skills was one Charles best fights. The Marciano wars took there toll on Ezzard but who was ever the same after doing a marathon with Rocky
Again, I'm critical and also bold................ Tunney W-10 Marciano. Marciano KO-14 Tunney. 10 or 15 rds really tells the truth / story / tale between these two greats........ MR.BILL
You'd think that in this forum people would analyze the actual fights and the quality of opposition instead of being impressed by a highlight reel knockout at the end of the fight, no matter how mediocre of a performance it was before the stoppage.
