Did anyone else think De La Hoya - Hopkins was a little suspect?

...the way it ended, I mean. I've watched that ending about 100 times, and nothing can convince me that De La Hoya couldn't have gotten up from that shot. It wasn't even that hard of a punch, no matter where it landed! Even Manny Stewart was skeptical. My theory? De La Hoya was starting to get caught, and took the relatively easy way out...as someone who has been in the ring a few times, I can tell you, getting stopped by a body shot isn't even remotely as embarrassing as getting knocked out by a head shot.

Guys who get stopped via body shot are usually smiling right after..."ah man, he got me with that body shot." But guys who got knocked out or stopped by head shots would usually hide in the locker room for the rest of the day - or week.

My opinion is that De La Hoya knew he might end up getting pole-axed, so he went down off a body shot, and stayed there. Watch the moment of the knockout. Everyone in the entire crowd is stunned, like, "um...what just happened?" Even Hopinks looks a little surprised. And the biggest give-away? De La Hoya wasn't even clutching the side he got hit! Clutching where it hurts is a human reflex! De La Hoya was supposedly sapped of energy by that shot, but he wasn't holding where it hurt, and he had enough strength to pound the canvas with his gloves.

But hey, he made $30 million for that fight...hell, I woulda went down in the FIRST ROUND if I was gonna make that much regardless of the outcome!

 

you need to get hit with a hard punch if you get hit on the button.
i don't believe oscar threw it in any more than i believe jones did against green.

 

I have no doubts Oscar was hit hard...but his reaction to it isn't consistent with any body shot KO I've ever seen. Looked like total over selling more then anything.

"Oh my god...it hurts so much...I'll just pound this dang canvas instead!"

Back when it actually took place, alot of people in this very forum were of the opinion that DLH quit.

Many people call it taking a dive......but I dont think that it was staged........

I do believe however that DLH could have easily gotten up from the punch, but did'nt do so because he knew that what was about to commence coming from Hopkins was a beatdown of embarassing proportions.

I think it reached a point at that time that DLH was running out of gas, and Hopkins was like the Jermaine Taylor fights in the second half, just about to get started.
....and DLH did'nt want any part of it.

It's true Oscar would have taken a whipping though, Hopkins usually comes on late and Oscar always fades during the latter rounds.

 

Thats exactly what happened. DLH was trying to play it off afterward like "damn, I was just starting to feel good in there, and the reason why I was pounding the canvas was because dang, he caught me with a good but one of those lucky shots.......

.....when the reality was that DLH typical of him was starting to feel the effects of the fight headed toward the latter stages and him knowing that Hopkins had held back and had alot in the tank.

 

Exactly. Now the shot Gatti caught Dorin with was a knockout shot, as was the shot Roy Jones caught that cop with.

Do you guys really think with the massive ****ing ego ODLH has that he just chilled out on the canvas when he was okay? He was in that fight and if he beat Hopkins it would've been gigantic. The most important thing he'd ever done. Come on. To become the linear, undisputed, completely unified middleweight champion and the man to dethrone Bernard Hopkins and he's just going to chill out on the canvas? My ass.

 

i agree. i don't think oscar threw it, BUT hop was coming into ascendancy.

also, oscar only took that fight because it was his 'best of the rest' option after he offered tito and shane less money than he would make to two fighters who had already beaten him.

it's hard to sympathise with oscar when he robbed the public of more interesting matches because of greed.

 

Exactly. Simple hating on DLH!

There was just too much incentive for him to get up and continue fighting.

That was a welterweight being hit by a lt heavy.
