If anything anarci I feel it just means he is better prepared. He had to deal with a lot more **** in fights then JMM ever did. Punches to the back of the head, to the kidneys, low shots, holding and hitting, hitting on the break was just all part of the game back then. Basically Tony had to defend himself from a lot more and thus I dont think he would have to change anything to beat modern elites. He wasnt a textbook boxer anyway so any improvements in the skill level of the guys who did things by the book really have no effect on Canzoneri.

Though perhaps there was a general improvement in technique..Guys like Tony and Chocolate were already at that stage IMO.

Marquez could barely hang with j.diaz and a past it Casamayor at lightweight.

    Canzoneri all day.

While I agree that Featherweight was his best weight, lets not forget that he beat Casamayor pretty handily and DESTROYED Diaz at LW

I am in no way comparing Diaz or Casamayor to Canzoneri, I'm just saying that he's beaten REALLY GOOD fighters at LW.

Casa was a corpse though. I dont think Juan beat him handily overall aswell, he certainly had a bit of trouble early on with Casa's craftiness.

Impressive and abrupt finish but I cant really see anything about that fight that you could use to pick Marquez over Tony.

At 135 I'd go with Canzoneri for sure.

    Pac>JCC

The ideal matchup between the 2 would be at 130 and not at lightweight.

Probably as close as the Freitis bout was...Almost debatable but I give the slightest edge to Juan.

I aint comparing Marquez to Acelino mind you but Ive felt for some time now that crafty slicksters like Casamayor give Marquez hell by giving less opportunities for Marquez to counter.

Take a younger, faster Casamayor who didnt fade near as much and it is a very hard assignment for JMM.
I think he would probably lose to tell you the truth if he was his more reserved and calculating version of his earlier days. But because by this stage he had become more of an aggressive boxer-puncher I tip the scale back in his favour.

I really did rate Joel when he was coming up but I got the feeling he turned pro a little to late and disappointed a little..probably didnt turn out as good as I expected. Thats not to say he didnt have an impressive career.
