Been an MMA fan since UFC 2. Love the sport, but have asked the question a few time. What dose it say for the sport when a PRo Wrestler is the champ...and back yard fighter was a head liner for one company and a big draw for another, ((But can't fight for ****)), and more and more outside people are coming in to fight. To where name some people that came into boxing with what these guys did, as well in boxing. Like I said, I do enjoy the sport, but feel for people that don't like MMA, to have 2 Pro wrestlers on cards and winning, a back yard fighter getting talked up from 2 companys, and other people from Football, basketball and other sports wants to fight on a big stage dosn't help. One question... If Brock had 3 fights then took on one of the Klits for their belt, what would eveyone say?? They would call it a joke. More pure MMA fighters needs to stay and knock the f($* out of outsiders so it will move the sport along. IMO. This is...Also, I have call many of the past UFC cards crap...but I can say I did enjoy this one last night. They did a great job.
Your argument is simple. I've been a fan since about UFC 20 (Went back catalogue soon after), but a fan of boxing far far longer. You ask too much of an ESTABLISHED sport that is only 20 years old.
Some of the biggest stars in the history of MMA have been pro-wrestlers. Sakuraba was a pro wrestler befoe ever doing MMA. The first three entrants into the UFC Hall of Fame were Shamock, Severn and Royce Gracie. Two of those did pro wrestling before they ever did MMA.
I thought it was a fine card with a little bit of everything. You had a great ground war with Soto/Stevenson, a close contested fight between Wanderlei and Bisping, a prospect overcoming a tough tough test in Keith Jardine and the birth of a new heavyweight star in Nog/Cain Velasaquez. All of the fights outside of the first one were intriguing and you got big knock outs and a pretty nifty knee bar even made it on the cards. It was just fine.
What is a "pure MMA fighter"? So Lesnar took some time to do pro wrestling, he still had an outstanding Amateur wrestling career and was even talented enough to get a shot in pro football. As for Kimbo, he's a draw. He brings in fans. I can bet you if Kimbo wasn't doing MMA, he'd be headlining Friday Night Fight cards with Gary Shaw. It's absolutely important to have amazingly talented MMA fighters on the card...but you need people to put the asses in the seats. Kimbo does that. What the sport really needs is for the fans to drop the "elitist beliefs" of what constitutes an MMA fighter. Accept all the fighters, treat them on an equal plateau to start and then let the junk separate from itself in the Octagon. The sport needs all the fans they can get to keep growing and I doubt taking two of their biggest draws and trying to paste them as "MMA impostors" is going to help.
This is the line where freak show and professional world-class tournament blurr. It also tells you why most people watch UFC. They wanna see people get hurt. I can honestly say that if the UFC was just a bunch of guys with no martial skill competing, just beating eachother for the cameras I would not watch it. I want to see more technical fights between two skilled and athletic opponents. I can't say that for the rest of our society though.
How the **** can a sport be "talentless"? Either you mean the fighters have no talent or you don't mean anything. As for the "haymakers" you decry, if you would go into the gym and try using your boxing stance for mma you'd see that you have to adjust it a ton in order to defend kicks and takedowns and that the best way to punch changes in order to adapt to these rules. You don't see perfect boxing technique in mma because not everything that works well in boxing works at all in mma. Stop throwing stones from the sidelines and making like you know anything about it and go try it. You'll respect the sport a lot more afterward.
I wont smash the screen, ill just bang the desk alittle :yep Na it bothers me alittle but it someone is that stupid ill try and educate him but thats his loss if he thinks the sport sucks. What I wanna know is if it sucks then why did he watch the event ? free or not. Thanks man im trying to make something out of it and hopefully one day ill be in the WEC or something and ill put a nice ESB logo on my shorts.
I've been watching MMA for...6-7 years. Still can't understand why anyone would get excited about two grown men grappling on the ground.
Because there's always a chance a brutal knockout can happen and that's always entertaining, if not sometimes tragic.
