Chang vs Ohashi II-Chang past-prime ad rocked a few times but drops Ohashi numerous times throughout the fight to break his will, with flashes of his destructive best. Ohashi uses his skinny, tall frame well at times but cannot stave off 'The Korean Hawk' for long whenever he gets his respect. Max Schmeling vs Mickey Walker-'The Toy Bulldog', former Welter and Middle champ, fights Louis-conquerer Max Schmeling (although this was before the Louis fight) and gives him a damn good fight, showing his p4p chin, getting floored heavily by a right hand, then resuming action by CHARGING Schmeling as the round comes to a close. Walker eventually gets beat down, but he's ridiculously outsized but shows just how formidable he must have been at the lower weights. And how good Greb must've been to outfight him, as Loughran showed the best thing todo was outbox Walker and clinch him when he gets in close. The reports I have read paint of picture of Greb beating the snot out of Walker, what a shame they can't find the film. Greg Paterson vs Unnamed Southpaw-Good competitive fight, Greg knows the mistakes he made, but he didn't get outclassed. Enjoyable showing from two guys with different styles who both came to fight. Georges Carpentier vs Battling Siki-Siki is wild and manages to wear Carpentier out before smashing him with an uppercut and leg-sweeping :rofl the fatigued champ to the mat. Notable for frenetic pace and Carpentiers booming right hand in the early rounds, which has Siki on the deck a few times. Enjoyable,if ragged action.
6 fights in total - 2 classic trilogies Gatti vs Ward: Stve Bunce, I'm sure, once said that this was the most over-rated trilogy in boxing history and I tend to agree. The first fight had great moments (round 9 being the obvious stand out moment) but as a fight it wasn't as great as history remembers with most of it seeing Gatti out-classing and badly beating up a crude Micky Ward. I still can't understand how Micky Ward was awarded the decision. The second fight was, in my opinion, so one sided at times, in favour of Gatti, that a rubber-match was unjustified. Yes, yet again, there were great moments, round 3 being the obvious one, but yet again Gatti simply school Ward at times and only his inability to stay at distance and avoid a war made those moments materialise. Fight 3 was, in my opinion, the best all-round fight. It was close at times, though Gatti clearly won, but lacked the amount of great moments that the first fight had seen to make it the best fight of the 3. Vazquez vs Marquez: There will always be a lot of "what if?" whenever we discuss this trilogy. If Vazquez's nose hadn't broke would Marquez had won in fight 1? If the referee hadn't had stopped Marquez in fight 2 what he have composed himself and won? If the referee hadn't called a count in the last seconds of fight 3, of course, Marquez would have earned a draw. Overall, though, this IS the best trilogy of the last decade. The skill level was amazing, the heart and determination shown by both fighters will go down in boxing folklore. The forthcoming fight is probably a year too late to matter but it still has the potential to be a classic. As for the first 3 fights, Marquez established himself as the far better boxer but Vazquez's heart was always a problem for him. At the end of all 3 fights I had Marquez winning but Vazquez, it seemed, was always just one left hook away from victory. In their 4th fight the weight, featherweight, will be the crucial factor. At Super-bantam Marquez, I thought, seemed to struggle with the natrually bigger man's strentgh. At feather, if Vazquez isn't shot and carries his power up, he could win in a early stoppage but will have to go through Hell to get there!
Bowe vs Golota II. :verysad Many a referee would have jumped in during that 2nd round..... Bowe's courage (and chin obviously) was unbelievable.
Roman Gonzalez v Ivan Meneses - Meneses was overmatched but he is a tough *******!! He took a **** load of flush punches and wasn't afraid to throw back.Gonzalez isn't the power puncher people thought he was. He stops opponents through accumulation (kinda like Cotto). He absolutely brutalised Meneses' face, both his eyes were swollen shut and he was bruised all over. He did the same to Niida IIRC. Gonzalez's next fight is against the only other guy to stop Meneses - Juanito Hernandez.
It was class though wasnt it? I love how fluid Gonzalez is as he mixes up his combinations to body and head.
What do you think of the match up with Joyi, hopefully down the line? Gonzalez kinda reminds me of a gung ho Julio Cesear Chavez. Gonzalez IMO is the best offensive fighter boxing at the moment.
Still ain't seen Joyi so can't comment on that :| Gonzalez is defintitely one of the best offensive fighters in the sport today but the only issue I have with his is he's a bit too flat footed.
