come on a guy trains his wole life for a title fight, he gets that chance after fighting comon opponents of the champ with beter results, goes into camp and prepares for weeks somtimes months training with sparring partners who worked with the champion, studdied tapes and gameplans and after all that he gets into the ring and hes put off by a "scarry face" !!!
Fighters do get intimidated in a fight. Its usualy by the ocasion rather than a scary face. The presure of focusing on sticking to the plan while the other guy is trying to take your face off, your punches not making an impresion and passing the round you needed to win, feeling tired, worying about that shoulder that might pop or a cut that might open, knowing the reff took a point off....theres hundreds of unsetling things going on in a fighters mind in the twilight zone that is the ring and not one of them is "a scary face".
pussys who worry about a scarry face dont make it past freindly sparring in the gym. they take up football...

Be as it may, Tyson still beat a lot of decent guys prior to the opening bell...... Reality sets in on a dude once he gets in the ring and the crowd is on hand and a dude like Mike Tyson is in the other corner looking ready to kill....... Guys like "Liston, Foreman & Tyson" could make a guy freeze like a rabbit before the fight even starts........

Now, Frank Bruno was a decent fighter with great size and strength, but he was a freezer...... Especially when in the big fight against a world class opponent........

I'll take Marciano via TKO in the championship rounds. I think he'd have to get up off the canvas to do it though with Bruno starting brightly, keeping Marciano off him with the jab the first 4 or 5 rounds and dropping him.

Yes bruno was a freezer but not by no scary face. one of the greatest assets a top fighter can have is a calm, focused big night temperment. schmeling wrote about joe louis rematch, he admited the atmosphere was unreal the tension was electric the one time he felt a bit on edge but he looked at Louis and he wrote that joe looked like he was ready for a walk in the park, oblivious of the atmosphere.

In truth, I thought Bruno had a chance against Tyson in 1996.... When I saw Bruno weigh 247 chisled pounds of muscle against McCall in 1995 over in London, I thought Bruno finally found himself.... Christ, Bruno looked like a body-builder who also owned a great left jab and a potent right cross.... Then before his ring enterance for Tyson in '96, I see Bruno crossing himself over and over and looking up at Jesus and all that heavenly jazz that goes with being scared shitless, and I knew his goose was gonna be cooked......

No, but styles make fights........... I think Marciano would have serious problems with Bruno if Bruno was on top of his game..... Marciano had a 67 or 68 inch reach and was merely 5' 10 1/2" tall with moderate to average hand and foot speed..... Marciano would eat lotsa left jab leather from the 6' 4" / 240+ pound Bruno while working his way inside and going to Bruno's body to apply damage..... However, Bruno had decent lateral movement when he chose to stick and move, so Marciano would have to cut the ring off and dig deep to Bruno's body.... This would not be an easy task for Marciano.... Both guys could win.... It is VERY possible....

I agree completely. He could do something similar to what he did to Tyson early in their first bout. I don't want to come across as though i'm saying Marciano=Tyson for style, but this fight wouldn't be a world of difference. I ultimately just think that when it comes to it, and the waters are deep, Marciano is going to try and smash the life out of Bruno's person, and he'll want it more.

There's always the size factor to be taken into account, and Bruno has that punchers chance, maybe a one two could drop Rocky, but if the Rock recuperates it could be a nightmare for Bruno. Marciano is a nightmare imo.

You know the real old dudes who are still around will swear that Marciano could've taken KING KONG's Left-Hook or Right-Cross and kept on chugging forward..... But I'm not so sure........ Marciano ate good shots from some of his lesser known opponents of the 1940s and he ate some good leather from Joe Louis, Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles & Archie Moore in the 1950s....... But, in truth, none of them guys (Except for Louis) were truly over 200 solid pounds and known for having wicked power.... Point is, we never saw how Marciano would react if nailed by modern heavies from the 1970s and upward....... I'm talkin' big dudes with big power who also owned skills.........

Could Marciano take Bruno's left-jab in the face all fight long? Or what about Bruno's right?? Remember the right-cross Bruno iced Gerrie Coetzee with back in circa--'86???

Yeah it's a very good argument and i see why people are taking that stanpoint. But he's definitely more mentally strong than Bruno and a harder man dammit! Haha just kidding round there, but like i said he's simply a nightmare in my opinion and this fight is going to be in deep waters, Bruno very conceivably gets drowned. There's two ways of looking at it.

The one thing I find ridiculous about this whole saga is when people harp on continuously about Marciano eating jabs all the while - for one thing aside from the Lennox Lewis fight when did Bruno consistantly use a successful jab - usually he was pretty poor in that area, being guilty of pawing endlessly with it to no great effect - not actually using it.

And on top of that Marciano didn't take jabs (like so many like to insinuate) - he never walked into jabs against anyone else - nobody could establish a jab on his (not even Jersey Joe and Archie Moore, two of the most educated left-handers in the business), let alone dominate him with one, or even keep him on the end of one for any great length of time??

Muhammad Ali commented on who difficult he was to hit with a jab following all the sparring for the making of the computer fight - another thing about that computer thing too - if you watch that (i know it was an out of shape Ali) but at 45 Rocky was easily quick enough for Ali's movement.

Overall Marciano would be too quick for (the in contrast) stiff and lumbering Bruno, aswell as being to brutal for him up close - when it happened it didn't take long for Bruno to go into fear mode and start to get overwhelmed and it wouldn't take long in this one either and as soon as Marciano started unloading I can see Bruno doing his 'freeze' thing and would probably ship a lot of punishment before either being stopped or dropped before the towel came flying in to save him.

Bruno, when he won, normally ended fights early or mid-way through the bout.......... Bruno had a wicked jab working against Bonecrusher Smith, but Smith went all out in round 10 and parked Bruno's ass like a Cadillac...... But Bruno was winning by a mile when he was clocked and stopped......

Exactly. Most of the punishment Marciano took at the Championship level was from razor sharp counter punching from incredibly fast fighters, not jabs.

Maricano consistently slipping Walcott's normally accurate jab.

Mr. Bill raised the very same questions that I have when it comes to Marciano's ability to give and take it from a big modern sized HW. Playing devil's advocate for a moment I wonder if Rocky posseses the power to take out a man the size of Bruno or Lewis or Foreman or Vitali etc.. We're not talking about 185lb 6 foot men here. These guys are monsters. As for Rocky taking it, we all know that he could from his opponents back then. But could he take it from the aforementioned fighters? One of the well known questions regarding Rocky is that he never fought a puncher at his own level (And no, a totally past it Louis doesn't qualify). What would nhappen if Bruno set Rocky up with a couple of hard jabs to the face followed by a monster right hand or two? If nothing else Bruno could punch with power as well as box decently. Could Rocky take it? This isn't Don Cockell or "Tiger" Ted Lowry after all. This is a six foot four 220-240 chunk of muscle with a considerable edge in reach as well. Even if Rocky could take it could he get past Bruno's vast height and reach advantage consistently enough to do damage? There's too many questions whenever we talk about Marciano vs a big modern HW I feel. Rock's heart and will to win and his conditioning match up with any heavyweight past or present without question. It's the other factors that make me wonder.

... the jab of man who was a midget relative to Bruno. Also, Marciano is lunging in against this 6 foot fighter. Try that when Bruno is unleashing a right hand and he may never wake up.
