Is Mark Breland the greatest disappointment as a professional ever?

I mean compared to the expectations everyone had for him coming out of the amateurs.

 

I know he won a title but many people were comparing him to SRR?!

 

With his talent and physical gifts, he should have reigned supreme for years.

 

Breland was hyped but never truly showed the potential he seemed to have as a pro.

For me, Roy Jones Jr wins this by a mile, he had and showed at the times the potential to be challenging Ray Robinson in the all time great stakes, but so often Jones choose the easy option, the minimum risk option, and because of this Jones to me is little more than pick-em as far as whether he is great or not.

Yes,Breland was touted as a future welterweight immortal. One American journalist stated that his best pro performance was in a Pointer Sisters video !!

 

No, he had two reigns as a titlist with some decent wins. I would say Panchito Bochado or Ricardo Williams are bigger letdowns, because though they didn't have as much hype as Breland, they also accomplished way way way less.

for me he is certainly up there. he was arguably the great amateur ever and certainly the best american AM. physically, as has been said, he had all the tools needed to be dominant and his skill set was top notch. he should have been the next ray leonard but fell well short. his accomplishments will always be eclipsed by his potential

Yeah Biggs was a big time disappointment. No argument here.

 

Mark Breland has been the poster-child boxing disapointment. This status is unfair. The expatins for him were unreasonibly high. Coming out of the 1984 Olympics he was expected to be the next great all time p4p boxer. Anything less and he would be a disapointment. Brelend held world championships/titles 2 times in his career. That by most standers might not make him an all time great, but by any reasonable standers he had a secusful pro boxing career.
