so what happened against tubbs? surely this was a passing of a torch moment for bowe, old vs new and all that? bowe was the big unbeaten olympian dude in that match up.

Bowe was probably a bit green for Tubbs who gave him some fits with his skills. I thought Bowe won, but its been a long time since Ive seen it.

I am guessing we are talking about the Bowe who beat Holyfield and not the overweight, ill disciplined fighter we saw afterwards.

I'd say he beats Bonecrusher and witherspoon. Tyson was showing signs of decline against Bruno but he was still very formidable and still had the head movement to easily get passed Bruno's jab which was just as good as Bowe's if not better. Bowe was always easy to hit even against Holyfield and was too slow footed to keep Tyson at a distance. I see a war early on but Tyson grinds Bowe down and stops him.

The Lewis against Bruno was cold and had not warmed up sufficiently which hampered his performance so I would pick Bowe to beat this version of Lewis. But the Lewis who smashed Ruddock would beat Bowe. I think Bowe is very overrated, his size and aesthetically pleasing variation of offense hid many of his deficiencies like a porous defence, inability to use the jab to control range, lack of mobility.

What were Seldon's best actual KO wins? All I remember him doing was busting up old/shopworn ex-contenders. He certainly never had any KOs that were as impressive or meaningful as McCall's over Lewis and Akinwande.

Not true, he blasted out Gerrie Coetzee who had been a champ only a year or so before and was still considered a legit title contender.

Besides, even when losing Bruno still showed he could deal with big punchers, as he boxed his way to big leads against Witherspoon, Bonercrusher, and Lewis before they finally managed to catch him later in the fights.

That's not really true, he had scored a string of quick KO wins and there was some renewed interest in him at that time. No one had beaten him since losing to Lewis, and he remained notoriously difficult to stop/KO through all stages of his career. McCall is the only one that ever pulled it off, and with just one shot.

Because he openly turned down fights with proven world class KO punchers like Lewis and Ruddock, even though they were two of the very biggest fights out there for him at the time.

He'd already had a reputation (fairly or not) for having a suspect chin in the amateurs, and who knows what weaknesses he might've shown in the gym behind closed doors.

Akinwande. He hit Lewis with a quick right hand and then leaned on him and pushed him down.

I don't see how being semi-pushed to the floor by a big man like Akinwande is somehow "worse" than being clearly hurt and staggered by a much smaller (and possibly shopworn) fighter like Biggs.

Damiani.

But he didn't, and unlike Bowe he proved he could deal with and beat big KO punchers of the likes of Foreman and Ruddock.

Lewis was hurt against Briggs and Bruno and survived; in fact, he came back to stop them both (whereas Bowe just settled for DQ wins over Golota).

Based on what?

A number of big punchers had difficulty KOing Bruno.

What's your excuse for the Akinwande KO?

More one sided biased banter from M2Sense. Semi pushed? Hmm turned down fights, or opted for a mulit fight contract instead?? Damiani got his nose broken, he didnt continue, thats hardly a knockout.

No, more FACTS that you typically have no response for.

Yes, a push/lean is clearly shown there on the video following the punch.

Turned down fights

Sure, tell that to the ref who COUNTED HIM OUT as he lay on his face.

Of all your ridiculous spin jobs, that one has to be your sheer dumbest one ever (which is saying a lot).

Cant find the video, but you can read it here smart guy.

http://www.***********.com/?m=show&id=2938 Fill in boxing scene in the ***

Breaking someones nose and having them stay down for a count is hardly the same as separarting someone from their senses plus talk about a spin job, Damiani was nothing special. :patsch

so hang on a mo, bowe, who dont beat tubbs clearly has a shot against the guy who blasted tubbs in 2 rounds (tyson) and the guy (witherspoon) who genuinly beat tubbs for a belt? surly its only a flip of a coin that bowe beats smith since he did not do much worse against tubbs than bowe did. Throw in that Lewis did KO bowe (albeit in the olympics) and its not looking good against the guys who beat frank. not by a long long way.

Watching Bowe and Witherspoon exchange their arcing overhand rights might be fun.

BTW - "Knockout", "Stoppage" - what's the difference. Damiani capitulated.

So did Gerald Mclellan against Nigel Benn. Theres a difference. The discussion was that I believe Mercers power is a bit overated. He really doesnt have a lot of big knockouts besides the Morrison KO.
Just dont believe Bowe purposely avoided punchers, nothing suggests it.
Same goes for Bowes ducking of Lewis. There is some merit to it, but what manager wouldnt opt to try and maximize the most of winning the title? Boxing is almost always business first. You can see how Mercer was viewed at the time as well.
Newman worked out a six-fight deal with Time Warner Sports (HBO and TVKO) that could ultimately gross $100 million for Bowe. It is potentially the most lucrative individual sports contract in history.

"Let me make one thing clear," Newman says. "I have but one agenda as Rid-dick Bowe's manager, and that is to make him as much money as possible in the shortest period of time. Everything I do is geared to that." Of course, manager Newman gets nearly a third of Bowe's take, but no one in the game would seriously argue that the man has not earned his cut of the action. Butch Lewis, Newman's onetime mentor in the business—they went two years without speaking until a recent reconciliation—says, "Of the high-profile players, I don't think anyone could have done a better job with Bowe than Rock has.

I don't need to read about it, I saw the fight. Mercer hit him with a single uppercut to the face, the guy plummeted onto his face and was counted out that way. Only you would somehow try to argue that a clean cut KO is somehow "not really" a KO.

And you were hit with the punch and have even the slightest clue how it affected him? What made his nose break and plummet onto his face in the first place?

Yet in the Bowe-Biggs thread you credit a guy he beat decisively as being a good fighter.

We were discussing punching power, not what the outcome of the fight was. Theres a difference between stopping a guy on a broken nose and rendering another unconscious, just pointing out the difference, not disputing how the fight ended.

Biggs was a decent fighter, but nothing special either. Incidently he beat Damiani in the olympics, neither stands out as a great pro regardless of Damianis fringe title win.

But he didn't "stop him on a broken nose," he KO'd him directly with a punch. The guy went down directly from a punch and failed to beat the count; that's not a "stoppage" on anything other than a punch. How many fighters that get counted out are outright unconscious when it happens?
