Other than RJJ and Pacquiao, name ATGs that didn't utilize a strong jab?

Most great fighters seem to have based their style round a jab, even many great swarmers/infighters used one as a starting point.

Off the top of my head, I can think of Roy Jones Jr and Manny Pacquiao who either didn't place importance on the jab or simply did not possess a good/great jab.

Roy Jones did possess a good jab, he just didn't need to bother with it much. I'm sure you've seen the Pazienza fight.

 

The Sugars Robinson, Leonard and Mosley.

 

Both Hopkins and your boy Mayweather prefer leads rather than working off a good jab even though both have good ones.

IF you are being strict on who you classify as great for the sake of the thread it's a tough one to think of many offhand.

I don't agree with Robinson and Leonard.Hopkins jab is nothing particularly special, but he still has an educated one, same with Mayweather though he is a good enough call.

Duran, Locche, Galindez, Zapata, Chang, Toney, Olivares all were guilty of neglecting it as a primary pointscoring weapon, but they all still made educated use of it either on the way in or as a disruptive tool.

A lot of the asian borderline greats didn't make much use of one.The Galaxy brothers, Ebihara...Moon just liked his clubbing bombs.Even sophisticatd boxer-punchers like Gushiken and especially Watanabe mostly used it as a range-finder.

yeah, the Pazienza fight is the first one that comes to mind when considering Jones is jab. But in general it wasnt a punch he utilized. He simply never needed to. All leaping left hooks and lead rights.

 

I wouldn't put forward either of these names for this thread then. It wasn't a primary weapon for either, but they do possess decent jabs. I wouldn't say the jab is as absent from their performances as it is from the usual displays from Jones and Pacquiao.

 

I disagree about SRR and SRL. Mosley is a fair enough call.

 

Mayweathers best use of the jab is too the body. One of his best weapons in my humble opinion.

 

It wasn't exactly difficult for Roy to utilize an effective jab against a technically inept midget like Pazienza. When did he ever use one on a note-worthy opponent of similar size? The most I ever saw him throw one otherwise was in the first Griffin fight, in which he landed what seemed about 5%. I don't think a consistent jab would've worked for his style, which is why he tended to just pot-shot with it when the openings came.
