French-Canadians aren't French, but they're still called French-Canadians right? Who says we're imprisoned by it? Wanting to be called African-American has nothing to do with imprisonment. Haitians and Dominicans are also descendants of African slaves. Most Dominicans (80%) would be classified as Afro-Latino. People refer to Black Hispanics in general as Afro-Latino. If you know anything about Latin America you'll see that 25% of the Latin population is of African descent and they are descendants of African slaves and are called Afro-Latino or Black Hispanics. Did you know that they also had African slaves in Europe? They will also refer to Blacks in Europe as Afro-Europeans.

Obviously we don't have the same cultural background, but that won't eliminate the connection we should have with our race world-wide. There are many different languages on the continent of Africa and one of the primary languages in some countries is English. English is the predominant language in Sierra Leone and South Africa. Because we don't all speak the same language or have the same culture we should be separate? What about the Asians, Hispanics, or whites that don't have that connection with there land of origin and can't speak the native language, but are still loyal toward their background? I know Hispanics that can't speak Spanish or Portugese, but still embrace who they are. What's wrong with that?

You still haven't said why it's insulting to be called African-American.

They also speak the same language, follow the same religion, have architectural connection, etc. Basically, they are more French than than a black American is African. By a long, long, long, long shot.

Ask many Haitians or Domincans that refer to themselves as Afro-Latino. Probably 0. That is Western, American term. Hell the 'Latino' term is not of South American origination. Those are created by the geniuses here in America.

Thus support my assertion that it is racist. You just confirmed it right there. You connect purely on racial terms. Nothing more.

And English being spoken in Sierra Leone and South Africa is stretch. That is as native as English is in Italy or Germany.

Majority of white Americans, especially those that have their roots before the 1900s do not speak French, Italian, German, etc. They refer to themselves as American only.

Again, other than race what connects you to the continent of Africa. I bet you most 'African-Americans' do not even know what country or area or tribe they are from in Africa.
Give me a meaningful connection - language, arts, culture, politics, economics, etc. Anything!

    To who?
For black Americans - I would find it insulting for after centuries of contribution (including the most important one - slavery) in science, national defenses, arts and among other things, they are not provided the same luxury as their white European immigrants.

For Africans - no cultural, economic or political similarity to modern Africa.

I am not trying to dictate to you what people should refer to themselves. I am just arguing that it is time to move on from the obsolete term African-American.

You're argument was that African-Americans shouldn't be called this, because they are not from Africa. French-Canadians aren't French and not all of them speak French.

I've actually heard some Dominicans and Black Hispanics refer to themselves as Afro-Latino. I've known some Black-Brazilians that refer to themselves as Afro-Brazilians.

Supporting your own doesn't make you racist and if it does than so be it. Embracing the people of your race or ethnicity doesn't mean you hate others.

English is the national language of Sierra Leone and South Africa. Most of the people of Sierra Leone are descendants of American and British slaves.

I know Italians and Irish people who are proud of and acknowledge their roots. The Italian flags they use usually give it away. Have you ever been to Boston during the St. Patrick's Day parade?

Of course the connection is race. Are we the only ones that do this? Do you consider Mexican-American boxing fans racist for supporting Mexicans fighters even though some of them have never been to Mexico and can't speak Spanish? What about Filipino fans who support Pacquiao? We don't have a cultural connection, because it was stripped from us during slavery. So you're saying that African-Americans shouldn't be loyal to Africans and vice versa, because of something that we couldn't control? Africans and African-Americans are both considered black. If both can be considered black then why can't both use the term African to describe themselves?

Being called African-American doesn't take away from what blacks have contributed to this country. It simply acknowledges an aspect of who we are. Some Blacks don't like being called African and some don't like being called black. So what should black people be called if they don't like being called black?

You say we shouldn't be called African-Americans, because we're all just Americans right? Doesn't acknowledging the fact that we're Black, White, Hispanic (Brown), or Asian (Yellow) also show that we're different?

Here's a funny story about me and shoes... I used to skip first half of school when a new pair came out... Well this was when the Grant Hills came out the Filas, well someone had already got my size and all they had were 2 sizes below and above my size... Well I opted for the bigger ones ...: I was walking around with some big ass Grant Hills but damn it ... I was the only one at school with them.... no one really noticed... LOL...

And I know all these shoes made a comeback and are still in style but they are for teenagers.... If ur over 21 and still wearing those style of shoes and clothes... Then u probably look dumb.... That's just my opionion though...

If I was grown wearing skinny jeans with a fresh pair then yeah. But nahhh. I am black. 99% of dudes my age still throw on sneaks like it is nothing. Of course I got Kenneth's too.. but I am in no rush to be an old head.
