Just wondering about this. Against Kessler he was pretty comfortably within the limit and against hopkins he was well within the lightheavy limit as well.

Did Joe exaggerate his weight making problems?

Joe fought tomato cans for 90% of his career.

Calzaghe looked like a concentration camp dweller at the Kessler weigh in

I'm sure he had troubles but I also think Calzaghe did like to have a moan about things like that.

I'd say it was pretty tough for him. If you look at pictures of him between fights he ballooned up a sizeable amount and I don't think he was the type to go on Hatton-esque binges either.

That said I have no sympathy for any boxer that complains about this or uses it as an excuse. Nobody forces them to drain down to the lowest possible category they are capable of. They do it for the perceived advantage so ultimately they have to accept if it turns against them.

No different to any other fighter that doesnt spend there time in the gym when they havent got a fight on the horizon, he just moaned about it all the ****ing time.

Super-middle was two-stone below his natural weight. It also became harder as he got older as his metabolism changed. I doubt he moaned about it any more than the next man.

he basically stayed there for 99% of his career and avoided all the good fighters which were either one weight above or below so he had his reasons

He looked really gaunt against Kessler, his last fight at SM.

The day before the weigh in for the RJJ fight he was 6lb over the limit.
