How does Pacquiao's chin rate amongst his welterweight counterparts?

The thing that surprised me most about Cotto/Pac fight was how easily Pacquiao managed to absorb Cotto's best shots. I thought for sure that Cotto's power would eventually get to the smaller Pacquiao. However, Pac seemed totally unfazed by anything Cotto had to offer.

So how does Pacquiao's chin rate when compared against his welterweight counterparts? Is it in the same league as Clottey and Mosley? Is it better than Mayweather's? Is it safe to assume that Pacquiao has an iron chin at welterweight despite the fact that he's only fought at that weight limit twice in his career?

 

No reason to suggest it isnt sturdy as it was at 130.

To tell you the truth though I feel this talk of Manny soaking up punishment from Cotto like it was nothing gets a bit overblown.
I thought he was pretty slippery that night and didnt take a hell of a lot of clean, hard power punches..A couple of times when Manny was on the ropes Miguel didnt really pull the trigger and overall he seemed tight and not really punching with his whole body, looking more just to score not really hurt..mainly because I think Manny just had him confused by the angles, speed and pace.

 

We even had FR himself say 'the weaker he is the better' when talkin about the 145lbs catchweight he fought Cotto at. Granted he did take the shots well.

It's hard to tell how his chin rates at the WW limit imho as we only have the Oscar fight to go off, where his chin wasn't tested.

 

Definitely a good chin, but I still wouldn't call it an iron chin. It seems to me Pacquiao kind of pulled off a Mayorga on us by staying in the pocket to take some hard shots and break Miguel down mentally before he took him apart physically. Yes pac has a good chin at welter, but it's always easier to get hit when you see the punches coming and prepare yourself to absorb them.

 

His chin is solid and clearly isn't anykind of weakness at welter. But it isn't iron cast either, he has been dropped before and has been KO'ed though boiling down to make weight may have effected his durability in the lighter divisions. So while he can clearly take a punch he can't be complacent.

 

Only Mosley has a better chin at welterweight (I don't think Margo's resistance will ever be the same after the beating SSM gave him). Mosley has taken big shots from not only Cotto, but also big guys like Oscar (prime), Margarito, and up at lightmiddle vs Mayorga, Vargas, etc etc. But p4p, Pac's chin is even better than Shane's. Since Pac's body matured as he left his teens and he started fighting at a weight he was comfortable at (from superbantam onwards), he has never been in anywhere near as much trouble as Shane was in the 1st Forrest fight.

 

I don't think Pacquiao's chin was tested enough in the Cotto bout to assume he has an 'iron chin' at this weight. Most of Cotto's clean blows were either body shots, or big hooks around Pacquiao's guard, to the ears, etc.
Although I do remember Cotto catching him clean on the chin just after the first knockdown I think it was, Pacquiao took it reasonably well, but it did stop him i his tracks if I remember rightly.

yah.. there was a couple or more times(after round 4) that Cotto had Pacquiao against the ropes but he didn't let his hands go. i think it was beyond respect.. i think it's almost as if he was feeling "fear" after round 4 when he had Pac against the ropes and he let his hands go, only to suffer because of it.

 

Pacquiao has proven to have a good chin. Hard to compare with other fighters though because there are so many factors. Everyone is capable of going down if hit in the right spot and/or absorbing multiple blows once hurt. Mosley's been down and his chin is legendary. Clottey has taken blows that would kill most people yet went down from a jab. Mayweather has never been down officially. Margarito proved over the years to be nearly impossible to put down.

I'd put these 4 guys over Manny for sure but the jury is out.

 

I think his chin is good, but we won't know how good till someone really tags him clean. Certainly good enough to be Elite at WW imo.

 

Pacquiao was hurt by Cotto a couple of times. There's one right hand in the 5th round that you can tell hurt Pac pretty bad. But he is so good at recuperating and wethering the storm. He has great ring awareness which means that even if he is tagged he doesn't allow his opponent to take advantage of it.
