Martinez loves that right hook. However, he does not do a great job of setting it up. He charges in face first and relies on foot speed rather than technique to get close enough to land it. Look for KP to take one small step to his own right, and then blast Martinez on the left ear with a brutal over hand right. That might be the show stopper.
NBA, I am going to do my best to be there, if it is in Atlantic City. If I am able, and I may be, the first drink is on me-- you racist *******! :nut
The thing with countering a jab by diving straight in is that you risk running into a straight right hand. Martinez doing that against Pavlik would be comparable to jumping in front of a speeding freight train.
In my last post I was mainly referring to the way Martinez used his right hook against Cintron and Williams. That worked against Cintron because they are the same height, and Sergio has a bit of a reach advantage. It worked against PW because Paul fights like he's 5' 8", and his defense is shoddy. It won't work against a good boxer/puncher who has a height and reach advantage, and uses every centimeter of it. Step over, pivot, and slam a right hand into an out of position Martinez.
A good powerful punch will stop the slapping. KP is not be the best technical boxer out there. Will prolly never be in the HOF. But with that chin and that power you slap him 5-6 times in a row will get you KTFO.
By pressuring him like hell. Remember Pavlik is the naturally bigger guy, more durable, and has heavy hands. Either a TKO or a decision victory like the Taylor II fight.
A couple things, pressure him as Pavlik always does and never really deviates from this game plan too much. The big thing is not to get frustrated and stay patient. Sergio is pretty slick but not Hopkins type of slick. He doesn't really roll punches he just tries to stay out of range. The reason why Pavlik has to be patient is every now and again Martinez will slip a Pavlik punch and land an overhand counter, he's a good counter puncher who will test Pavlik's focus a little. However, I see Pavlik winning this fight as Martinez will probably fade under the pressure late and get caught repeatedly with his hands down late in the fight. I'm thinking Pavlik via t/ko around round 10.
I know you are supposed to work the body to take away the legs, but after rewatching the last Martinez fight I didn't know that meant punching to the thighs. OK. Paul Williams is tall, but geez...... You think he is going to try and put his right arm around Pavlik's waist nearly as much? The Hook&Hold Hatton School of Boxing?
Just saying, Martinez never even hurt Pavlik. If Kelly had any kind of a cutman, he wins by probable KO. This rematch needs to happen early 2012.
