a piece in the Mirror today lads Jonny Stapleton Both Freddie Roach and reigning WBA super bantamweight World champion Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym have supported Bernard Dunne’s decision to retire. Trainer of the Year for 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009, Roach claimed that Irish superstar Dunne, who announced his retirement last Friday evening, has nothing to prove and can hang up his gloves with his held head high. Roach, the brains behind pound for pound ring king Manny Pacquiao’s recent success, trained the former WBA World Champion in his first 14 professional fights before the Dubliners return to Ireland in 2005. The highly regarded trainer had previously advised super bantamweight Dunne to move up a weight after he lost his most recent defeat. However speaking to the Mirror earlier this week Roach, who also worked with Irish World champions Steve Collins and Wayne McCullough, labelled Dunne’s retirement decision as the correct one. “He's making the right decision, at the right time. He is a champion and a great fighter. He won a European ans World title. He has got nothing left to prove. He done great job for Ireland and I wish him all the best in the future." Meanwhile the fighter who virtually retired Dunne after he stopped him in the third round of their World title fight in September, Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym stressed Dunne can be proud of his boxing achievements. “Every boxer knows themselves when it is time to retire. The time must be right for Bernard Dunne. You don’t win a World title unless you are a good fighter and Dunne will be proud of what he has achieved. He has great support in Ireland and he when I met him he was a very nice man.”
mccloskey would really want to get a move on if he was 25 it would be alright to be fighting once every 7/8 months but by the time he fights next he will be touching 31 and still no closer a world title shot i fear by the time he will fight for a world tuitle he could be 33 and his quick reflexes might well be slowed down by then
Kudos to Johnny for getting his access to Poosawat again and a very good.Kudos to Kev for biatch slappin Brick Fists back into his box! That had me laughing here at work - I genuinely thought a member of the Heenan family had hacked Carlitos account at first.
Slappy can you get Carlos to recreate this picture nex time you bump into him This content is protected All he needs is a shirt with a collar, a jump, a black leather jacket, big pair of shades and a smirk! I want to get it transposed onto a flag for when he fights over here again and I actually get to go! And no, I'm not taking the **** either!
National Championships preview Wednesday, 24 February 2010 11:53 Denis Hogan has been sparring with Drimnagh southpaw Jimmy Sweeney ahead of his third meeting with Ken Egan in just over a year at the National Stadium on Friday night. Neilstown southpaw Egan, who is targeting a historic tenth Irish senior title on the trot, meets Hogan in the semi-finals of the Elite National Men's Senior Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday night. The light heavyweight meeting will be the third clash between the duo at the same venue. Both men met in the 2009 Senior Championships semi-finals and Egan won 16-3. They then traded leather in a box-off to help with the selection process for the Irish 2009 AIBA World Championships squad last summer. Egan won that encounter with a score of 12-1. But despite the reversals, 24-year-old Hogan of the Grangecon Boxing Club, who beat Darren Cruise to book his ticket into the last four, is expressing quiet confidence. The former Irish intermediate champion, a carpenter by trade, also believes that sparring with Drimnagh ace Sweeney won't do his prospects any harm at all. He said: 'I've one year's senior experience under my belt and I will be confident going into the semi-final. Hopefully I can cause an upset. We'll see on Friday night. 'I've been doing a lot of training at the Drimnagh Boxing Club for the championships and I've been sparring with Jimmy Sweeney. Jimmy's a southpaw and and Ken's a southpaw so I'll know exactly what to expect. 'Ken beat me on the last two occasions and fair play to him, but I've got a year's experience at boxing senior now and you'll see a different man in the semi-finals this time out.' Meanwhile, St Michael's Athy club-mates John Joe Joyce, who has moved up from light welterweight, and Roy Sheahan meet in the welterweight semi-final. Commentating on the Athy derby, IABA President Dominic O'Rourke, who is also coach at the St Michael's Athy BC, said that he was looking forward to a good technical clash between two top class boxers. Defending champions Darren O'Neill, Con Sheahan, Philip Sutcliffe and Eric Donovan, who produced a master class in last weekend's win over Marc McCullough, will also be involved in the last four bouts this weekend. Jimmy Sweeney will also be in action at the weekend. The Drimnagh man takes on former senior champion Alan Reynolds at heavyweight on Saturday night. Two elite women's welterweight semi-finals will be decided Friday and Saturday. The Novice Championships quarter-finals will also be decided at the home of Irish boxing at the weekend.
