You need to expand your definition of what counterpunching is because a counter punch is not just getting there first. The whole saying 'make em miss and make em pay' is a counterpunching mantra. You counter your opponent's missed punch by firing back with the most logical punch for that situation based on the range, opponents posture, and the open target(many times created by the missed punch but more often than not also created if an angle is used or a technical flaw exits)

You can also block/catch/deflect an incoming punch and return fire. Winky Wright and Arthur Abraham prefer this style since their defense centers primarily on blocking

Stepping just out of range then stepping back in with a punch also is a counterpunching tactic.

It's more difficult and takes far more anticipation and timing to beat an opponent to the punch(ie out lead them) then it is to let them lead, make the necessary defensive action against the punch, then fire back. The if they're good a feint then this can be nullified

When I watch Martinez I always think of the term "skitterbug." The guy skitters all over the whole ring. He moves fast and he moves a lot.

However, not all movement is intelligent movement. Martinez wastes a lot of energy on mindless movement for the sake of movement.

He circles the wrong way, he rushes in face first rather than coming in behind a good jab, and he often backs up in straight lines without throwing punches or properly defending himself.

Any one of the bad habits mentioned above is enough to get a guy knocked out by Kelly Pavlik. Put all three of them together, in a fight where Pavlik will be looking to make a statement, and Pavlik by brutal knockout seems like a foregone conclusion.

If Sergio could drop those habits in one training camp, he'd have a much better chance. However, dropping those habits in one training camp seems very unlikely. He's been fighting the exact same way ever since the Margarito fight ten years ago.

Pressure and power bother Martinez, and they bother him a lot. He has two losses ten years apart. BUT both losses came against durable, high work rate, pressure fighters. Pavlik is a bigger, stronger, smarter pressure fighter than anything Martinez so much as had nightmares about.

this fight should not be happening in the first place. Hopefully Pirog becomes Pavlik's next mandatory so he can face a genuine 160 fighter. Typical Top Rank protection bs.

No because MArtinez is a 154 fighter and Pirog is a 160 fighter. Is that hard to understand?

martinez is better and a tougher fight. that shouldnt be hard to understand either....unless you think pirog would beat
    martinez.

on top of that...explain how this is protecting kelly when this is probably the worst fight he could make in terms of risk/reward. he wins, he beat up the guy williams just beat, he loses he lost to the guy williams just beat. if they are protecting kelly by putting him in there against martinez, then they are doing a **** poor job of protecting him.
