To be an icon you need to be much more than Floyd ever will be - both as a fighter and even more as a person.
A well argued response there. I can see im dealing with a true expert. Ad hominem arguments do not substantiate anything here. Go back to wanking over boxing videos from the early 20th century geek, i'll carry on actually having a life.
The vast majority of that all accomplished in much better physical shape than shown in the Toney fights.Want to see a fighter in his mid-thirties hit the wall during a fight, watch Mccallum against Toney. He was slower than a tortoise by the second fight.
And were is yours? You decided to take a pop at me on a personal level simply for not having the same opinion as you. You take this far too seriously. You need to lighten up.
Fair enough. But your opinion is one that is not well-founded IMO. And yes, I do take it pretty seriously, there are a core crew of people that come on here to DISCUSS and LEARN. 'Monzons a robot' or whatever shows you don't have the patience to appreciate a style that beat some very good fighters, had a massive consistant streak as the World Middleweight champ (not some WBO intercontinental bollocks) and never got stopped. How **** was he then?
Stylistically I dont like him. Hes methodical certainly. All time great? well his record speaks for itself, I wouldnt argue with that. But it is on the basis of style that I pick master technicians like Toney to beat him by out-working and out-boxing him. Monzon was hardly an elusive target. Robust? certainly. heavy handed? again his record speaks for itself. Just the way I see it. And lets be fair here boys, none of us knows how that fight or other fantasy matches would go. And however well constructed an argument, that is not equivalent to a real fight. Anyways, no offence intended, was just having some fun stoking the flames lol didnt think people would jump all over it to the degree they have done thugh lol
Even though I disagree with you, that is the kinda post I like to see. Save the flaming for the General mate :good
All good m8. I am actually (though you may doubt it) a boxing nut. Have to say (as I have in another thread) that this is certainly the best boxing forum Ive come across in terms of content and discussion. And I'll forgive you the geek comment lol
We can agree or disagree on whether Floyd is a liar or not, we have done that dance many a time and neither of us will ever convince the other. But I refuse to agree to disagree on the subject of Floyd and cherrypicking. He is a cherrypicker supreme - and it takes a lot of effort, bias, and delusion to convince yourself otherwise. You have managed it, but I think the vast, vast majority of neutrals will look at who he fought at 140 and above, then look at who he could have fought, and see the truth. Pacquiao has fought better fighters than Mayweather, end of story. Toney is cocky and black, Hopkins is cocky and black, Whitaker is cocky and black (and Hopkins and Whitaker do not really have a far more crowd-pleasing style than Floyd, so that reason is ruled out as well IMO). These are three of my all-time favourite fighters. That Floyd is cocky and black has nothing to do with it, it's the way he has coldly calculated his career to protect that zero that irks me and many, many, many others. We'll never, ever see eye to eye on this though, so let's not bother.
I don't find much interest in todays lineup of boxers, but Floyd maybe one of my favorites. As for being an Icon, that is quite laughable. Ali was an Icon. Floyd isn't...
Since when were Genaro Hernandez, Manfredy, Corrales, Castillo,Delahoya, Hatton, Judah (no1 at 147 when it was made) cherries? Gatti was top5 and a big fight when Mayweather fought him too. Since when does a cherry picker get in the ring with 9 lineal champs? Since when does a cherry picker have fights turned down by Pacquaio, Hamed, Delahoya, Mosley, Hatton, Margarito?
I'd pick Monzon over Toney solely on the basis of the jab and some movmenent. Monzon's pretty horrible technically, but great fighters who incorporate mvoement will always have a chance against him imo, McCallum showed that, and lateral movement was not at the core of his gameplan. To Toney's credit he still did enough to beat McCallum. I'm not saying that Monzon's footwork is for youngsters to watch to learn, but it worked at the highest level for the man, together with a legendary jab and this philosophy, 'if you get close to me i will just start smashing you in your body and face like a wild man'. If you walk right into Toney's office then he smashes you over the head with his chair and you don't get a chance to sit down yourself. Monzon didn't do that though.
