As this is a boxing forum and that is one of the all time great fights - aswell as the fact it ended tragically. I think this is why mate. Going to an evening with Nigel Benn next saturday and wouldn't be surprised if this fight is mentioned. Everyone who is just starting to get into boxing should watch this fight, to truly understand the sport. a night that won't be forgotten and will continue to be talked about years from now.
weight may have been an issue, but I haven't read that anywhere. However if you watch the clip above, you will hear that McClellan sacked Manny Steward after a row and brought in a new team for that fight!! You sack the people before the fight of your life, the people who know you best?!?! Brendan Ingle was in the corner that night and his exact words about McClellan's corner were "it was organised chaos".
should of been a 1st round ko for the g-man, benn was down for well over 10 seconds and that ref would separate them for no reason to buy benn time. there is no doubt in my mind that the ref was clearly a home town ref.
McClellan blew Mugabi out for Eubank's vacated title but wasn't mandatory or even WBO top-5, for that matter neither was Mugabi. Benn was #1, Dennis Milton #2, Steve Collins #3, Sumbu Kalambay #4 and Reggie Johnson #5. Benn wasn't mandatory either, nobody was.
I still thought it was bull**** the way the ref seemed to buy critical seconds for Benn when he was in sure trouble in the first round.
home town dosent have to mean hes from the same place as the venue or fighter, simply that he supports them atsch. the ref was obviously pro benn and if you cant see that your ******ed.
I think if you actually look, the problem is the ref's inability to speak english and communicate effectively with both boxers. Instead, he has to resort to using body language which basically means he had to break the fighters up, make eye contact, make his sign language to get his point across, and then allow the fighters to re-engage, all the while trying to keep authority over the fight by not allowing them to fight until the ref was ready and he thought they knew what he was talking about. he does the same to both boxers in round 1 and the following rounds. But really it wasn't that big of a deal - it wasn't the difference between Benn winning and losing. And he certainly got back in the ring well before the 10 second count was up. Benn was the better man on the night, saying the ref had something to do with it is just sour grapes.
If I was ******ed then I wouldn't be able to take part in a conversation. you are one of 2 people on this thread that stated that. Shall we discuss Cortez in Mayweather vs Hatton? Nah.
Yeah but Benn got back in the ring and on his feet just inside the 10 seconds and as for the refs delaying for McClellan to get at him if Benn was going to get stopped in that first rd he wouldn`t of been able to get back through them ropes but the ref was a little hesitant, not a good ref.
You seem ******ed mate, hometown ref DOES mean he`s from the fighters hometown and as i understood it he was French and its got **** all to do about supporting anyone, you twisting words to suit your argument but it sounds stupid.
