Lightweights the closest. of course, welterweights, like you say, Robinson is number one full stop, that rules it out of what I was saying. But my fascination for the middles in unparalleled. I think its fair to say its historically the most interesting and significant division outside of the Heavies.

Please ,fans above tell me this...What middleweight [160]pounds,be it Robinson, Monzon, Hagler, etc lick these great fighters who weighed 15 to 50 pounds more than they did, such as Gene Tunney, Tommy Loughran,Tommy Gibbons,JackDillon,Battling Levinsky,Maxie Rosenbloom,Gunboat Smith[who ko'd Sam Langford],Big Bill Brennan[several times] etc in a300 bout career?...Do you think any one of your favorite middleweights ,Monzon, Robinson,Hagler, would even attempt to fight and lick these much, much larger men? Well why did'nt they tackle the BIG BOYS of their era? Answer, they knewn their limitations...The great Pittsburgh Windmill, was FEARLESS...P4P No 1...

Well, my favourite middleweight is reported to have had about that many fights and licked that many world class heavyweights and under when often outweighted by 15 to 50 lbs. :deal But i must admit that Harry Greb was a pretty awesome himself.:good

I think he have discussed this before.

I like Monzon in this. I think he has the reach, engine and strength to keep Tiger at range and on the end of his punches. Tiger would constantly be pressing and I think it would resemble the second Briscoe fight but closer.

I used to put king carlos at the top of the heap, and he still is among modern 160 men...But,on reflection harold greb cannot be denied overall...
What do you folks say on greb v fitz and greb v langford. (at 160 mind.)

Nice, just read it. Great fighter, he could make people's top ten lists at 160.

The exact reason why I can't stand John Ruiz. He's the best example of a fighter who uses Monzon's holding tactics in the worst way.

Monzon clinches and ties up his opponents, but at least he'd counter back with the opposite hand. Ruiz clinches overboard with more wrestling and doesn't counter back. He complains to the ref when the opponent gives him a taste of his own medicine, and puts on a show worthy of the best acting jobs on the soccer field if he gets hit with a low blow.

Monzon wasn't the most fun fighter to watch, but he was workman like, got the job done, and knew when to clinch and hold against the opponent's attack.

All I had to go on was about 3 mins of footage of McAteer :lol:

Come on Monzon only held when necessary, IMO he tried to keep the fight at long range and 90% of the time achieved this.
