This bloke is a bit of a forgotten man of Australian boxing. He was a genuine contender for Barney Ross's Welterweight crown and was the biggest draw in Australian boxing during the depression era,a time when boxing was one of the countries most popular sports. Strangly for such a draw he possessed neither looks nor a punch. He was a slapper whose few stoppage victories were on cuts caused by his gloves wet laces lacerating his opponents eyebrows. But he was also a master boxer despite his unorthodoxy, well conditioned and intelligent. His refusal to travel cost him a world title shot and the riches it entailed. Apparently moves were made to try to get Ross down to Australia to defend his title but Ross was warned not to by Maxie Rosenbloom (who had seen Carroll first hand when he travelled for a series of fights in Australia) who said "not only will he beat you he'll cut you to pieces".It probably didn't happen but is a nice story. Anyway here's a short bio of Jack This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected A great fighter well overdue and deserving of a shout out.:good
To people like us who love our boxing history he's an absolute legend. To the average punter who thinks Australian boxing is Anthony Mundine/Danny Green he's Jack who? :-(
