A future force in the heavyweight division - 16 year old Irish-american from Forked River, NJ via Brooklyn, NY - Bobby "the Bull" McCarthy.

In a recent article in the Press of Atlantic City McCarthy's trainer says - "This kid is nasty in there. Even though he is just 16 he has been beating up grown men in the gym for the last two years. There are very few heavyweights in the entire state that can even spar with him. He is solid as a rock, comes foward and throws non-stop punches."

McCarthy's long-term goals are to fight in the 2012 Olympics in London and then turn professional. He trains six days a week and his potential is vast. He regularly spars with Atlantic City native and former WBA heavyweight champion Bruce Seldon at the Gladiator gym in Forked River, New Jersey.

 

I hear he is having one in May with a few more Irish titles up for grabs

 

its the craziest idea ever...i heard they thought having the novices involved would increase attendance and revenue??? Now we have to pay 15 yoyo on fri and saturday- great way to get people to come watch the sport.

Plus it wrecks the tv show too- i hear rte are showing fridays sesion

 

Sinky's camp couldnt take the fight because of prizefighter by all accounts- Moore is down to fight Healey on the show now. with an eye on fighting jamie moore on the following show..now that would be a fight

 

Just got some inside info there about the senior finals from a very good source and he reckons that malloy will beat conor aherne. So Ill keep the rest of my predictions the same apart from the flyweights and say molloy will beat conor. It hurts ne to say it cause conor was one of my best mates on the oul high performance and I would love to see him win another title

Freddie Roach believes his three ‘Irish Musketeers’ will become some of the best fighters to ever represent Ireland.

Matthew Macklin, Dean Byrne and Jamie Kavanagh complete a unique Irish pugilist trio all training with the greatest boxing trainer in the world in the famous Wild Card Gym.

And the Trainer of the Year for 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2009 claims that Wild Card’s Irish contingent will benefit from sparring with World champions such as, Manny Pacquiao and Amhir Khan before impressing on the World stage themselves.

Roach, who co-manages Byrne and the fluent Spanish speaking Kavanagh with Steve Feder, already has Irish pedigree having worked with Irish World champions Steve Collins, Wayne McCullough and Bernard Dunne.

But speaking to the Irish Mirror this week he stressed his current Irish crop may go on to enjoy similar success.

“Dean Byrne arrived back in the States this week so now we have three Irish Musketeers under one roof. Macklin, Kavanagh and Byrne are all at Wild Card. We will find out now if its true that you can never have enough Irish. The lads have the ability to do well and they are getting sparring with the best in the World. Being in the ring and around of the likes of Manny and Khan amongst others will help them become amongst the best Ireland has seen,” Roach explained.

The three fighters are at very different stages in the careers. Macklin is a European Champion and is one fight away from a possible World title shot, Byrne is undefeated in eleven fights and is ready to progress to the next level while 19 year-old Kavanagh is yet to box as a pro. But regardless of where they are now Roach believes they are all heading toward the top of the game.

“Mackiln is a good kid. He is a tough fighter, he listens, learns, and he's been great to have around the gym. He is our latest Irish addition but he has adapted well to Wild Card.

“Jamie Kavanagh is a choir boy compared to the two behavioural wise, but he can fight. He's a great prospect and his time in camp and being around Manny has served him well. His home is Wild Card now.

“While Deano could charm himself into a locked safe. However with me his charm doesn't work. He is a character that’s why people like him but he trains hard and he can fight. He's got the skills to be one of the best ever to represent his country, and to become one of the best in the world.

“The three fighters will be ok here. They known each other and get along well. But I do expect Kavanagh and Byrne to go at it. Because of their weight class they may spar and that will make things even more interesting,” Roach added
