This is what frightens me the most. Gmitruk and Adamek had a certain bond that exists between the best trainer-boxer duos. Adamek lacked that with McGirt.

Now, I happen to think Shields is an outstanding trainer, and it's true--perhaps this could be for the best, but the language barrier concerns me and for a fight of this magnitude, I'm not sure Shields and Adamek will be on the same level.

I hope they are. Only time will tell, I suppose.

He'll have close to two months with him so let's hope they bond. From what I've heard, I think Shields is serious about wanting to become Adamek's long term trainer. But of course, the results will dictate their future. And to be fair, in the last little experiment there were likely other variables at play, other than staff (eg., Dawson's undeniable talent had a lot to do with it). When Adamek stands eye to eye with Arreola, you start to scratch your head how he managed to fight at 175lbs.

I'm curious, how big a role did Shields play with Holyfield and Tyson (two small HW's mind you). Was he the man in charge for the bulk of their historic HW careers?

This is bad news, but Adamek is too experienced fighter to lose because of this. And I like the idea of Adamek being at 215.

Its impossible. When Adamek was fighting at CW, he was about 207 pounds in the ring (vs Bobby Gunn). He was making the weight, now he doesnt have to make the weight, so he will weigh more I think. Otherwise it was stupid to vacate the ring belt at CW. Arreola's trainer says that Chris will weigh 235-240 pounds and noone believes in this.

You know...regardless of the outcomes of the "big fights" (Mayweather vs. Mosley and Pacquiao vs. Clottey, or even a meeting of the winners), if Adamek is able to silence his critics - and even some of us fans! - and topple Arreola, he'll have to be the frontrunner for 2010 FerOTY. :deal And that would still leave him plenty of time for a potential title shot later in the year! (hopefully against Haye and not a Ukrainian)

I agree. 215 is the minimum. IMO, Gmitruk had the idea saying Adamek should be 225-230 for Arreola.

Adamek trains very hard with Ronnie shields. There is a huge note on his website http://www.tomaszadamek.com.pl/blog.php#20100303

There is wrote that in a few days there will be opened a new polish-english Adamek official website, because of the fans who dont speak polish.

True, it will be known after the fight, but I have a bad taste in my mouth from when Adamek last changed trainers, though under completly different circumstances.

Yea that is how I am looking at it too.

I don't know how ill Gmitruk is, this weekend he was in the corner of another Polish prospect Masternak during his fight, and plans on continuing to work with him. Seems wierd he can run around in the ring with other fighters in PL, but backs out of the biggest fight of his fighters career on short notice.. just odd thats all.

Read an interview with Shields and here are some highlights from it:

Shields not wanting Adamek more then 215 (old news). Shields working hard with Adamek, doing lots of excersizes, lots of work on his stamina/conditioning, doing new things like swimming into the mix.

Wants Adamek to change his defense, working on head movement, and countering, says Adamek has great accuracy, and speed. Training looks like that Ronnie throws, lots of punches at Adamek, Adamek has to avoid them all, then counter. And says its working great so far. He doesnt want to throw too much at Adamek at once, and isnt trying to change him, but just add certain things, or polish them up. The defense he says has to change, as he doesnt want Adamek taking as many punches as in the past.

Says they understand eachother great, and are working well.

We will see the 24th, I don't expect him to flame Adamek, but what else is he supposed to say for the camera, hope it is true though, as Shields has some good ideas, and may improve Adamek, and round him more. Every trainer has his own tricks, and ideas that he can give and help the fighter with, hopefully this will happen here.

I don't think the language barrier will be as big of an issue. Adamek before the Estrada fight has already trained with Bloodworth before and language did not seem to be an issue. With McGirt Adamek was still fresh to the U.S market, still living in Poland. Since then I am sure his English has far improved, and especially common terms used in boxing to understand his trainer. Supposively they joke around and have conversations, so they are understanding eachother fine from what I hear.
