THat would be smart! But not all "fighters"...boxers included are always smart. James needs to work on "MMA Defense" for leg strikes and take downs. He if can get good enough to avoid the ground and keep it on the feet he'll win some fights. But I agree...if James gets pinned on his back he'll be like a fish out of water unless he really starts exploring the full MMA skill sets.

Toney will be taken to the ground and tapped out immediately. Nobody is gonna stand and trade blows with him. Just cannot see this turning out too good for the guy.

And, if he boxes like he has done for so long, i.e shoulder rolling, surely he will be easy for takedowns standing like that.

It's far too late for him to acquire those skills. He will get the basics, nothing more.

    It's actually a legit story.

    From Dave Meltzer's daily update...

James won't be remotely competitive on the ground, and his peek-a-boo mongoose defense isn't suitable for UFC style striking. It's gonna be ugly.

On the other hand, he's a very prideful individual. Maybe if he takes an asswhooping in a humiliating fashion it will finally motivate his fat ass to get some help for his eating disorder and get into some kind of reasonable shape to fight.

I don't think that a fighter of Toney's calibre and talent would NOT allow him to pick up on the essentials of this sport. If he dedicated himself to it...he could be top guy. He won't be a BJ Penn but he could still get some very legitimate wins.
